De Schotse regering heeft gisteren de grootste prijzenpot ooit bekend gemaakt. The Saltire Prize moet de ontwikkeling van Marine Energy in een stroomversnelling brengen. In Schotland wel te verstaan.
First minister Alex Salmond gaf aan dat Renewable Energy de volgende jackpot voor Schotland moet worden: “Scotland won the natural lottery with oil and gas in the 1970s and has won it again in its potential for planet-saving renewable energy. Our Saltire Prize is a call to action to scientists around the world to help bring the power of the seas around Scotland and indeed the United States, online that much sooner.”
De Schotse regering heeft ambitieuze plannen. Men wil al in 2011 maar liefst 31% van de benodigde energie in Schotland opwekken op een duurzame manier en in 2020 moet dat minstens 50% zijn ! Bron: BBC News

Saltire Prize Medal goes to wave power pioneer Professor Stephen Salter
Professor Stephen Salter MBE has won the Scottish Saltire Prize Medal for his role in the development of wave power. Salter led the University of Edinburgh team that designed and developed Salter’s Duck wave energy converter in the 1970s. Today, he is a specialist adviser to Aquamarine Power.
Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, says: “Prof Salter is a thoroughly-deserved recipient of the inaugural Saltire Prize Medal, having done so much over four decades to identify and overcome early challenges to this frontier technology. His role in driving forward continued improvements in wave energy generation is widely recognised across the industry and across the world.
“Scotland leads the world in the development of power generation from our seas and oceans and the vision, ambition and drive shown by Prof Salter has played no small part in that achievement. Schotland Op Weg Naar 100 Procent Duurzame Energie in 2020
Schotland wil in 2020 al zijn elektriciteit uit duurzame bronnen halen. Volgens de Schotse overheid is het land op koers om deze doelstelling ook daadwerkelijk te halen.
Schotland haalde 15 jaar geleden slechts 10 procent van zijn elektriciteitsbehoefte uit duurzame bronnen. Nu ligt is dat al 60 procent. De ambitieuze doelstelling van 100 procent in 2020 moet in de komende twee jaar te halen zijn.
