Update 8 juni 2010: Is Oranje wel Vuvuzela Ready?
Dat is de grote vraag die de Deense bondscoach Marten Olsen de media inslingerde.
Het lijkt mij een terechte vraag. De Denen speelden al twee keer in een stadion met 30.000 fans met Vuvezela’s, die voor een oorverdovende herrie zorgen.
Oranje zal het maandag 14 juni voor het eerst meemaken als er in een stadion met 90.000 uitzinnige fans wordt gespeeld tegen Denemarken. Tip voor de bondscoach: spreek signalen af met de spelers om zaken over te brengen. Met praten en schreeuwen bereik je geen speler.
21 mei 2010: De KNVB heeft bekend gemaakt dat het niet is toegestaan om Vuvuzela’s mee te nemen in het stadion tijdens de oefenwedstrijden van Oranje.

6 mei 2010: Heel goed van Vuvuzela unPlugged om even de aandacht te vestigen op de risico’s op gehoorbeschadiging bij gebruik van de Vuvuzela. Beter gezegd voor de omstanders want die lopen het grootste risico. Want er komt een enorme golf geluid uit de Vuvuzela. Wat dacht u van maar liefst 131 dBA bij de hoorn-opening. Ook op wat afstand krijgt u nog altijd te maken met 120 dBA als u een meter verder staat of zit. Zelfs op twee meter afstand nog steeds een respectabele 113 dBA.

28 april 2010: Tja, daar kon je natuurlijk op wachten. De vraag was alleen wie komt er met een Oranje Toeter, met een Oranje Vuvuzela.

The World’s Largest Vuvuzela – Gigantic face lift for infamous Cape Town unfinished highway
Hyundai South Africa has unveiled the world’s largest Vuvuzela ahead of the 2010 World Cup. This monumental masterpiece, has been installed on the Cape Town unfinished highway, has been created as part of Hyundai’s national “Gees” campaign and is aimed at encouraging South African’s to come together and “bring the Gees” in celebration of the world’s greatest sporting event to hit our shores, the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Construction is underway for what is set to break the Guinness World Record for being the largest sounding trumpet in the world. This gigantic structure is a whopping 35 meters in length and 5.5 meters in diameter. Current record is documented at 32 meters. “The construction started close to three months ago,” says CEO of Hyundai South Africa, Alan Ross. “The structure had to be built a section at a time and each will have to be transported separately to the site for the final installation which took two days to finish.”

Voetbalfans mogen geen Vuvuzela meenemen in de World Cup stadions als die langer zojn dan 1 meter
De FIFA publiceerde een lijst met verboden zaken waar ook de Vuvuzela op staat (> 1 meter). Ook anders soorten toeters, zoals de Kuduzela, gemaakt van de hoorns van antilopen, komen het stadion niet in. De toeschouwers moeten bromfietshelmen en luidsprekers ook thuislaten. Opvallend is de vermelding dat het ook niet is toegestaan om dieren en wapens mee te nemen.
Tenslotte heeft de FIFA laten weten dat shirts met racistische teksten neit welkom zijn.

South Africa ponders vuvuzela ban after complaints
South Africa’s World Cup organising chief Danny Jordaan may ban vuvuzelas from inside stadiums after complaints from broadcasters and supporters.

Oranje Oordopjes voor spelers en coaches Nederlands Elftal onderweg naar Zuid-Afrika
Vandaag heeft de ochtendvlucht van KLM naar Zuid-Afrika een pakket aan boord met 50 sets gehoorbescherming voor de selectie van het Nederlands elftal. De 115 decibellen die de vuvuzela’s kunnen produceren hinderen ook de spelers tijdens de wedstrijden en trainingen. Lionel Messi klaagde hier gisteren ook al over na de wedstrijd tegen Nigeria. De door Beter Horen aangeboden gehoordoppen zijn voorzien van een speciaal filter dat het stadiongeluid maximaal dempt, maar de spraak van de spelers onder elkaar niet belemmert.
Maandagochtend wordt het pakket aan Van Marwijk overhandigd, net op tijd voor de wedstrijd tegen Denemarken. Zodat Sneijder en Van Persie bij een vrije trap goed kunnen overleggen wie hem mag nemen, en de bondscoach tijdens een strafschop Stekelenburg kan uitleggen hoe de Deen Tomasson normaal een penalty neemt.
Deze oranje beschermdoppen brengen het stadiongeluid terug tot die 80 dB.

NOS gaat geluid bij uitzendingen bijstellen om Vuvuzela herrie te beperken
De NOS heeft besloten maatregelen te nemen tegen de ‘vuvuzela-terreur’ uit Zuid-Afrika. De NOS komt zodaarmee tegemoet aan de vele televisiekijkers die zich ergeren aan het harde gezoem van de toeters tijdens de uitzendingen van de WK-wedstrijden.

Blatter says FIFA will not ban use of vuvuzelas in stadiums
Sepp Blatter has defended South African fans’ right to blow their vuvuzela horns at World Cup matches despite global criticism from television viewers of the constant blaring noise.
“I have always said that Africa has a different rhythm, a different sound,” the FIFA president said in a Twitter message yesterday. “I don’t see banning the music traditions of fans in their own country.” Source: The Star

World Cup Fans Freak Over Eco-Vuvuzelas Made From Kelp
Many of the vuvuzelas that have been seen during the 2010 World Cup matches have been made of plastic, but one Cape Town company’s idea for a version made from kelp has the eco-world (literally) buzzing.
Adam Carnegie first made brightly colored kelp vuvuzelas for a fundraiser at his son’s school. When he saw how excited people got about the traditionally decorated horns, he founded the (KELP) in 2008.
Kelp is a sea plant that washed up naturally on many beaches around the world. Most people might dismiss it as smelly and gross, but Carnegie sees a wonderfully unique raw material. When kelp is dried out by the sun, it transforms into different shapes — from straight and long, to curly and curvy. The trick for Carnegie and his small team of artists is simply to find the right ones.
Kelp horns are made from dried kelp. The kelp pieces are painted using designs that are suited to the various shapes of the horns and to the customer’s requirements.
The horns consist of two distinct sections. The head and the body. The head is the bulbous area often including the dried fronds and the body is the extended length of the horn. The head is the main feature and the body is painted with a matching design.
The simplest, the football vuvuzelas are decorated with stripes in the various club colours. Wildlife and sea creature designs are more complex. They are intended to help educate and encourage awareness of wildlife especially of endangered species. Designs using human figures are more artistic and become decorative artworks in themselves. All the basic designs can be adapted to include logos etc and can be modified as requested.
Once the horns have been painted they are coated inside and outside with a suitable varnish. They have a leather thong around the shaft for hanging and a paper neck tag with info about K.E.L.P as well as contact info. Sources: CrispGreen and K.E.L.P.

De videotheekketens Videoland en Movie Max vragen aan alle Nederlanders om hun Vuvuzela in te leveren.
Wat er gebeurt met de ingeleverde Vuvuzela’s blijft vooralsnog een geheim. Dat heeft te maken met de hoeveelheid ingeleverde Vuvuzela’s. Maar er komt een perfecte bestemming, die binnenkort bekend wordt gemaakt.
De actie geldt op de goedkoopste film en loopt tot en met zondag 18 juli 2010.

Pope bans vuvuzelas on British tour
The pope has banned faithful followers from bringing vuvuzelas to his public appearances on his UK tour next month.
The controversial horns made famous by fans at South Africa’s World Cup in June, were among a number of banned items at Pope Benedict XVI’s events during his four-day tour, the papal press office confirmed.

UEFA ban vuvuzelas
The forthcoming round of European Championship qualifiers will not be subjected to the controversial drone of the vuvuzela after UEFA banned the instrument from all matches falling under its jurisdiction. European football’s governing body has decided that the trumpet, which was a fans’ favourite at the World Cup in South Africa but divided opinion among the worldwide television audience, “would not be appropriate in Europe”. The ruling means vuvuzelas will not be heard at Euro 2012 qualifiers or at Champions League and Europa League fixtures.

South Africa Cricket bans vuvuzelas
Vuvuzelas have been banned from the Champions League, set to begin in Johannesburg on Friday. “We have had various discussions with key stakeholders and we feel the vuvuzela is not appropriate for cricket,” said SA cricket boss Gerald Majola. But now the fans will have to put up with the non-stop music, dancers and cheerleaders. Give me an orchestra of vuvuzelas any day ahead of that lot.

Bold Earrings Win Vuvuzela Recycling Contest
It faced tough competition from concepts for Christmas trees, toilet-paper holders, and lamps, but Megan Bernstein’s design for big, colorful earrings beat them all out, becoming the winner of WoZela’s vuvuzela recycling competition.
The contest, sponsored by two South African advertising firms, drew more than 100 entries suggesting ways to reuse or recycle the plastic horns that blared throughout this year’s World Cup matches.
Bernstein’s hoop earrings, which the Associated Press described as consisting of “circular cross-sections of the long, hollow horn,” were the clear favorite of the jury of local artists and designers. Event organizer Matt Blitz said the design also met the goal of generating ideas that actually could be produced by local artisans in order to benefit the community.
“They’re not just an aesthetic reuse,” he said. “They could become a product that community artists could construct to create their own revenue.” Source: Treehugger
