The WWF Solar Boat: Campaña Embárcate by WWF Spain
Geschreven op 27-7-2010 - Erik van Erne. Geplaatst in Vervoer en OVThe World Wildlife Federation (WWF) has left no stone unturned to save wildlife. This time around, the leading wildlife and endangered species conservation organization is looking towards renewable energy to make a difference.
As part of WWF Spain’s new ‘Embárcate’ campaign, the organization plans an eco-tour along the Mediterranean coastline for the next three summers. A 46-foot solar boat will visit Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) such as the Cap de Creus Canyon and as other important Mediterranean coastal areas.
The WWF Solar is completely powered by solar energy and has zero carbon emissions. Its 65-sqm roof is covered with photovoltaic panels that give it enough power to travel at an average speed of 5 knots. It can run for 90 nautical miles straight, essentially two full nights of sailing or around 18 hours, when its batteries are fully charged. This green initiative looks like WFF’s effort to promote both greater use of renewable energy and conservation of marine ecosystems. Sources: WWF and Ecofriend
