planetsolarUpdate: 26 February 2013: The 2013 program for PlanetSolar is going to be exciting. Numerous projects have been organized from scientific missions to cultural events and educational programs.

In partnership with the University of Geneva, PlanetSolar will take a team of scientist from Florida to Iceland, following the Gulf Stream, in an effort to collect new information and data. It’s the co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and Professor at the University of Geneva, Martin Beniston, who will head this project. Read more about the PlanetSolar Deepwater project.

On her way to Florida, the M/S Tûranor PlanetSolar will attempt to beat her own record of the fastest transatlantic crossing with a solar boat in 26 days.

6 May 2012:  The first world tour of history with solar energy ended on the 4th of May 2012, at 14.12 hours and 30 seconds. PlanetSolar covered 60,023 km, crossed all the oceans, and reached all the continents. All done with solar energy only. The first trans-continental solar navigation, the first solar navigation of the Panama and Suez Canal, the first crossing of the Indian Ocean, the China Sea, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea are achieved. Congratulations to the PlanetSolar team.

4 February 2011: The world’s largest solar powered boat will sail around the world to show solar power is a viable source of energy. A nearly 100-feet long and 50-feet wide ship named “Planet Solar” weighs 60 tons, and is decked with photovoltaic modules. The vessel was launched in Monaco four months ago.

German entrepreneur Immo Stroeher and Swiss project founder, Raphael Domjan made their dream a reality. They’re taking it on a record-breaking round-the-world trip to show that solar power is a viable source of energy for transport. On board batteries allow the boat to sail for about three days without fresh solar power. The catamaran will stop in Miami, Cancun, San Francisco, Sydney, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi.

27 february 2010: The world’s biggest boat powered by the sun was unveiled in Germany on Thursday ahead of its planned circumnavigation of the globe in 2011 – the first under solar power. The sleek, 31m by 15m catamaran, known as PlanetSolar, 35m by 23m when flaps at the stern and the sides are included, will be “silent and clean”, say its makers, also called PlanetSolar. “Jules Verne had already predicted that one day man would be capable of destroying everything or saving everything. An exhaustion of our fossil energy resources and a climate imbalance due to using them are forcing us to give our society a rethink.

Paradoxically, this situation is an opportunity for our civilisation. Using technology and our knowledge to improve our energy efficiency and promote renewable energies is the path towards a lasting world.

PlanetSolar wants to show that we can change, that solutions exist and that it isn’t too late. Future generations are looking to us; our choices will mark the future of humanity.” Raphaël Domjan

PlanetSolar: The Largest Solar Powered Boat in The World

In La Ciotat in the south of France, a very special boat is undergoing maintenance in a shipyard.

Pascal Goulpié welcomed euronews aboard the PlanetSolar, the only vessel that has sailed around the world using only solar power. It is big – 30 metres long – and generates its own energy from more than 500 square metres of solar panels. Having been round the world once, the boat is preparing for new adventures.
