No Solar Roof for Model 3

Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla would probably offer a solar roof as an option on Tesla’s Model 3. Now, Elon Musk was throwing some cold water on the idea at the National Governors Association. Virtually killing it.

All of Tesla’s seat options are now vegan

Tesla made some changes to their available options, making some options standard, and notably eliminating one thing: leather seats. As of now, Tesla only sells vegan seats.

While this lack of leather is not made explicit on the Tesla configuration page, any mention of leather has been removed, and all upgraded interiors are now referred to with Tesla’s “premium” designation which they applied to the original rollout of vegan seats made of a new synthetic material.

However, not every component in a Tesla is vegan – cars still come with a leather-wrapped steering wheel standard, but Tesla has offered to provide a non-leather steering wheel upon request in the past for customers who make a point of avoiding all leather.

Why Tesla Staff Get The Model 3 First

Tomorrow, the Tesla Model 3 officially goes on sale, with the first deliveries taking place at a gala event at Tesla’s Fremont production facility.

But while Tesla’s launch party may end up looking very much like any other Tesla event we’ve seen — including the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X launch events — the first customers to get their hands on Tesla’s latest brand-new electric car won’t be high-flying Tesla investors or eager fans who have paid a massive premium for a “Signature Series” model.

Instead, they’ll be Tesla and SpaceX employees who were given early-access to Tesla’s Model 3 reservation list ahead of the official Model 3 reveal event last March. But why has Tesla decided to give its staff first pick at Model 3, and what restrictions will those early staff Model 3 owners have on who can register or sell the car?

Why you probably don’t want the $35,000 Tesla Model 3

Tesla made a big deal about its Model 3’s base price of $35,000 and how that makes it attractive to a whole new range of buyers who couldn’t afford its more expensive Model S or Model X. While it’s certainly true that a Model 3 will be cheapest way to get into a brand-new Tesla, let’s be clear that there will be practically zero Model 3s at its base starting price of $35,000. Here’s why.

Choosing any color other than black raises the Model 3’s price by a grand. If you want an upgraded interior package, that’ll be $5,000. To be fair, a package that includes upgraded 12-way power heated seats, open-pore wood trim, a higher-end audio system, and a center console with docking for two smartphones is very attractive at that $5K price point. It’s such a good deal, in fact, that we’d be surprised if most Model 3s weren’t so equipped, which raises the non-black EV to $41,000.

Another of Tesla’s well-publicized features is Autopilot. All Model 3s get some assisted driving features, such as emergency braking and collision avoidance. But if you want a Model 3 that will stay in its own lane at the speed of traffic, exit freeways autonomously, and self-park itself, that’ll be another $5,000. Granted, not everyone is going to want those features, but if they do, that’ll raise the cost of our hypothetical Model 3 to $46,000.

At some point in the future, Tesla promises to enable full self-driving capability to the Model 3. There’s currently no timetable for activation of this technology, and Tesla says it may vary by location due to the need for regulatory approval. Still, if you want to future-proof a Model 3 with this potential capability, it will cost another $3,000 over the $5,000 cost of the Autopilot kit.

Bear in mind that we’re talking about the standard Model 3 that boasts a range of 220 miles and does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. The long-range Model 3 with a range of 310 miles and a 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds (it also charges faster and can go 10 mph faster flat-out) starts at $44,000. It’s these long-range Model 3s that are currently being built. The standard model with its $35,000 sticker has a planned production start date of November, 2017.

All the same options we discussed – upgraded interior and autonomous hardware – are available on the long-range Model 3 just as they are on the standard version. Piling all those same options on the long-range Model 3 brings us to $58,000. We’re in no position to opine on the value proposition of any Model 3 considering that we’ve yet to see one in person for a detailed analysis, let alone drive one. Also, every single car sold in America has an advertised base price that quickly rises with options. But the fact remains that very few people will actually buy a $35,000 Tesla Model 3.

Tesla Verlaagt Prijs Model 3 Opnieuw

Solar Panels on a Tesla Model 3

Electric cars and solar panels seem like a match made in heaven: free, clean power as long as the sun shines. A self reliant, solar car that’s not dependent on the power grid could recharge sustainably from anywhere you dare to venture.

So, have you ever wondered about bolting solar panels on your Tesla? And why don’t all electric cars come equipped with solar panels for a sleek charge-on-the-go solution? In fact, with improving solar technology and clever ground-up engineering, a few self-charging solar cars are just at the point of coming to market. In this video we’ll delve into the practicalities of solar power for vehicles and have a look at some of the early adopters of this emerging technology.

In 2017, Elon Musk suggested that Tesla would offer optional solar tiles on the roof of the model 3, but later retracted the statement. This was Elon Musk’s idea in 2017 – that car roofs are small and inefficiently angled platforms for viable solar installations, and charging from a home solar installation made more sense. You could even charge at night on stored solar and cheaper off peak electricity. However, Elon might have changed his mind, confirming that the Cybertruck will offer a solar roof option on the truck’s bed.

To understand if a solar car could really work, we need to find out how much solar energy the surface of a car can capture, and how much range that energy will provide under realistic driving conditions.

So let’s take a sedan the size of a Tesla Model S, almost 5 m long and 2 m wide, and put a totally impractical, hypothetical array of solar cells covering the whole plan-view rectangular area of 10 square meters.

When it comes down to it, solar vehicles are all about efficiency. It’s a matter of energy to weight. A practical solar car would really need to be designed from the ground up with reduced weight and low aerodynamic drag, to create a vehicle with more favorable energy density. For as far as electric cars have come in the last decade, the energy density of gasoline is still far greater than lithium ion batteries.

Teams gather each year in Australia to race pure solar cars across the continent from Darwin to Adelaide under the scorching desert sun for the World Solar Challenge. Consistent winners of this class have been the evolving Stella series from the University of Eindhoven, the team from which Lightyear sprang in 2016. Lightyear one reevaluated every component of the car and used lighter materials like aluminum and carbon fiber, to build a lighter vehicle with the best aerodynamic coefficient of any car on the market. Four independently driven in-wheel motors also lower the cars weight, and improve powertrain efficiency.

Sono Motors on the other hand, are starting with a more affordable $29,000 compact solar car designed for urban use. In designing the Scion prototype. Sono’s proudest new technology integrates solar cells into polymer body panels to replace conventional painted metal bodywork.

Toyota has experimented with a demonstration Prius with high efficiency thin-film triple junction cells made by Sharp, and Hanergy Solar, a Chinese manufacturer of thin film panels, have also demonstrated prototype cars with panels that can harvest 8-10 kWh per day and supplied such panels to Aston Martin for their GTE racing car.

Most solar panels rely on cells made from semiconducting silicon crystals, which convert sunlight to electricity at around 15%-19%, but new technologies are in the works to create higher efficiency solar cells utilizing new materials. As the future unfolds, and more cutting edge solar technologies come to market, we can see self charging solar electric vehicles become more and more practical, as cells get more and more efficient. A future cell technology with efficiencies above 50% would be a game changer, and probably make solar cars ubiquitous.

Heavy batteries are a limiting factor in the feasibility of solar cars. A breakthrough battery with more favorable energy to weight characteristics would revolutionize electric transportation, and make solar cars far more realistic.

Promising new technologies that utilize materials like graphene, solid polymers, and ceramics are currently in research and development, and are poised to create the next generation of powerful batteries with higher energy density, greater service life, faster charging, improved safety, and potentially even lower costs.

Tesla Is Making a Push Toward Fleet Vehicles Lead By Model 3: Tesla Model 3 is starting to make waves in the corporate fleet world

A lot of corporate fleet managers who are running the numbers are starting to realize that electric vehicles, such as Tesla, offer some significant advantages.

The range EVs has long been a limiting factor for corporate fleets to go electric, but Model 3 and several EVs have made this a thing of the past.

eIQ Mobility, a data science startup that has been working with Tesla to convince fleets to go electric, has been presenting a new standard metric, the EV Design Mileage, to determine whether an EV’s range can satisfy the daily operational requirements of an existing ICE vehicle.

Corporate cars tend to drive more than the fleet average, as it’s seen an important part of the job. If corporations take the initial hit of depreciation and then the still perfectly good EV goes to the second-hand market after 2-3 years, that will make a huge push for accessible and affordable EVs.

There is another thing for consideration when it comes to Fleet managers buying Tesla vehicles. A while back someone I read about talked to another person who works for one of the largest cities in Texas. He told him Model 3 was considered for the city, and the numbers appeared to work out favorably, but it was nixed by the upper management who thought it would look bad for city employees to be seen rolling around in “posh” Teslas. Will the same misplaced logic work once Tesla sets up in Texas?

It will take education on how much they cost to purchase. Many people assume that any Tesla is $100k to purchase. Period, full stop. So it’ll take more education for them to know that the Model 3 is affordable and even the S is cheaper than it once was. Without advertising, that will be a slow process. I agree with this vide and I think the idea that Tesla needs to start advertising spending 50 dollars per car on advertisement is a very interesting idea. It is presented by the shareholders for the upcoming shareholder meeting and not favored by Tesla’s management. I admit that there is a conflict of interest in what I am saying know because my Torque News channel will probably directly benefit if Tesla does targeted advertising online. However, Tesla needs to educate people and change perceptions about its price and how it can benefit the fleet managers. Tesla doesn’t cost $100K, we know it, but that’s the perception many people have.

Apparently, another city also looked into buying Tesla vehicles for the city fleet because the numbers looked right and Tesla would have been cost-effective. But people’s misconceptions about the cost of a Tesla was the fear of politicians. They were afraid someone would challenge them for “buying luxury cars with taxpayer dollars” as if they were outfitting the city in Lamborghinis or something.

But it’s different when it comes to Chevy Bolt. That is what the Chevy Bolt is for, the numbers probably work a little bit better too. And people don’t think of Chevy Bolt as a luxury expensive car. Although the Bolt and Tesla Model 3 SR+ have similar list prices.
