Tesla Battery Day 2020: The New Cobalt Free Tabless Batteries Called 4860 Cells

Elon Musk made some big announcements at Tesla Battery Day 2020. The company is planning to get rid of Cobalt in their batteries and to manufacture its own “tabless” batteries, called 4860 cells.

This type of battery is six times more powerful, and the range will be increased by 16 percent. The new battery technology will make a $25,000 Tesla car a reality. Tesla Model S with Plaid powertrain also was announced, which can reach 60 mph in less than 2 seconds and break records on tracks. Max speed: 200 mph.

    Panasonic to launch 4680 battery cell production in 2021

    Panasonic wants to start the production of prototypes of the new 4680 battery cell presented by Tesla at “Battery Day” as early as 2021. Most likely, production will take place in the Nevada Gigafactory.

    Tesla had initially announced the new battery cell format at their Battery Day earlier this year. The benefits of the new cells designated 4860 are that they are bigger and claimed to be better, not the least because of advances in production. The key here is the use of a dry electrode, to rely primarily on nickel, and a ‘tabless’ design. The cells will also integrate into the vehicle as an entirely structural component. The overall goal is a range increase of up to 54% and simultaneous reductions in kWh price by 56% and the investment per GWh by 69%. The 56% cost reduction would bring Tesla within reach of $50/kWh battery price.

    While Tesla is also launching their own in-house production, they will have to rely on suppliers as well to deal with the planned battery and vehicle mass production. Elon Musk also confirmed this on Twitter just before the Battery Day itself: “We intend to increase, not reduce battery cell purchases from Panasonic, LG & CATL. However, even with our cell suppliers going at maximum speed, we still foresee significant shortages in 2022 & beyond unless we also take action ourselves.”

    StoreDot unveils Tesla-like 4680 battery cells they claim can charge in 10 minutes

    StoreDot, an Israel-based battery startup, announced today that it produced the first 4680 cylindrical cell, like the ones unveiled by Tesla at Battery Day last year, that can charge in just 10 minutes.

    Last year, Tesla unveiled its long-anticipated 4680 cell that they claim could reduce battery cost by as much as 50%. 4680 refers to the size 46mm by 80mm, which is much bigger than any other cylindrical cell produced before. Tesla claimed to have solved thermal issues with creating cells of that size.

    The automaker announced plans to produce the cells itself, which would be a first, but it also plans to partner with existing battery manufacturers to produce the new 4680 cells.

    LG Energy Solutions, CATL, Samsung SDI, and others have all announced pilot production programs to try to build the cells and get a contract from Tesla.

    Now StoreDot also announced its own foray into the 4680 cell format and made a bold claim about the charge rate.

    The company has been focused on improving charge rates in EV battery packs for years, and it has made some impressive demonstrations before, including recharging an electric scooter in five minutes.

    Today, StoreDot claims to have produced the first 4680 cell prototype capable of charging in 10 minutes:

    “StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging battery technology for electric vehicles, reveals its ground-breaking silicon-dominant technology applied in extreme fast charging (XFC) cylindrical cells. In a world-first, the company demonstrated the prototype 4680 form factor that is fully charged in just 10 minutes.StoreDot’s extreme fast charging cylindrical cells utilize a 4680 format, the one increasingly favored by global car makers, and have been in development for over three years. Pioneering work for these breakthrough technologies was kicked off at Warwick University in the UK.”

    Dr. Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO, commented on the announcement: “Achieving the goal of extreme fast charging a cylindrical cell in only 10 minutes has been on StoreDot’s technology roadmap from day one. After three years of vigorous development and testing, leveraging multiple vectors of our world class researches, I am hugely proud at the effective collaboration across our globe that enabled this important achievement. It’s highly significant that we can offer Electric Vehicle manufacturers the choice of cell formats, utilizing our XFC technology that will overcome the current barriers to EV ownership: range and charging anxiety.“

    The company says that it can achieve volume production of the new cell by 2024.

    Tesla verkoopt 6 gigawattuur aan Megapack-opslag voor Californië

    De Amerikaanse accu- en autoproducent Tesla heeft een deal gesloten voor levering van 2 gigawatt (GW) en 6 gigawattuur (GWh) aan Megapack-accusystemen. Projectontwikkelaar Arevon gaat deze de komende jaren installeren in Californië.

    Ontwikkelaar Arevon bouwt de komende jaren samen met het Amerikaanse energiebedrijf Tenaska 9 accusystemen op kritische locaties in het Californische elektriciteitsnet. Al dan niet gekoppeld aan zonneparken.

    “We zijn blij samen te werken met Tesla, voor dit product waar veel vraag naar is”, zegt Justin Johnson, COO bij Arevon. “Met deze deal nemen we het risico op leveringstekorten en vertraging weg. Zo verzekeren we dat we op korte termijn opslagsystemen kunnen opleveren voor onze klanten.” Waarschijnlijk moeten de accu’s in kwestie in 2023 draaien.

    Arevon heeft nu al 250 megawatt (MW) en 1.000 megawattuur (MWh) aan accu’s in gebruik in Californië en Nevada. De 9 beoogde nieuwe systemen hebben een vermogen van 200 tot 300 megawatt per stuk. De accu’s zullen dit vermogen zo’n 3 uur lang kunnen opnemen of afgeven, en daarmee in Californië vooral concurreren met piekgenerators op aardgas.

    Tesla 4680 Battery GOT STOLEN According To Elon Musk

    The world of EVs is advancing, and it is taking a super impressive turn. Tesla, the world’s renowned EV producer, boasts of not just the best cars but the best batteries. Well, that title is about to change hands as StoreDot, infamous battery producers, have produced an exact and even better copy of Tesla’s super 4680 battery cell.

    Tesla, Elon Musk’s mind-blowing EV company, has a monopoly in the EV market both in the US and in countries that use EVs. These technologically advanced cars do not only feature high definition fast speed but have the most durable and long-lasting batteries. Let me change the tense, “had the most durable and long-lasting batteries.”

    Until recently, Tesla’s batteries have led the EV battery market. The 18650 battery cell, the first of its kind and the not so recent 2170, Tesla batteries and cars have commanded a monopoly over the EV industry effortlessly. And now, with the production of the 4680 battery cell, this company thought to clinch its spot as the primus inter pares in the EV market. (meaning “first among equals.”)
