StormSustainable mobility is the future! By using the power of innovation and collaboration, STORM Eindhoven challenges the image of electric vehicles.

Recently STORM created world’s first electric touring motorcycle , with which STORM will race around the world to prove that electric mobility is ready to take on the world!

STORM Eindhoven is an automotive team from Eindhoven University of Technology consisting of 28 talented and motivated students. Our goal is to show the people of the world the true potential of sustainable mobility. By creating our own electric motorcycle and racing it around the world, we will have a perfect proof of concept to give sustainable mobility the attention it deserves.

STORM Eindhoven develops and builds the first electric touring motorcycle in the world. It has a range of no less than 380 km! Furthermore, the motorcycle has a unique modular battery pack, which means that the setup of the motorcycle can be adapted to the preferences of the driver. Also it will be possible to swap empty battery packs for fresh ones. In order to prove that mobility can be both sustainable and desirable, the team will travel around the world in 80 days, relying on the STORM Grid. This is a network of STORM followers that offer energy sources to the team. The goal of this challenge in 2016 is to bring the experience of sustainable mobility to the people. It also serves as the ultimate proof of concept for sustainable mobility. Furthermore, this provides the team with the knowledge and experience needed for the adventure that is taken on in 2017.

With the experience gained in 2016, STORM Eindhoven is confident to be successful in the 2017 80 Day Race. In this race, STORM will race other teams with sustainable vehicles around the globe, setting an example of innovative, efficient and desirable transportation in a competition.

For the 80 Day Race, teams will race between 8 of the most exciting locations around the world without using a single drop of fossil fuel. The competing teams will choose their own routes and means of transport between 8 stopovers. All land-, water- and air vehicles are allowed as long as it runs on renewable resources and has no combustion engine.

The 80 Day Race project is inspired by Jules Verne’s book ‘Around the world in 80 days‘, betting that new means of transportation make it possible to achieve this challenge. At that time, in 1873, horses were about to be replaced by steam-powered vehicles. Today, we’re facing another tipping point with the first mass market electric vehicles being available. We want to accelerate the transition towards zero emission mobility through an 80 day race around the world.

The teams will start in Paris, Europe and will be heading east in the direction of China. Each team is free to choose its own route, to make the adventure even greater. From Asia, the teams will cross the North Pacific Ocean to arrive at the west coast of North America where the half way mark will be celebrated. Teams race through a variety of landscapes towards the east coast of South America, before heading back to Europe. From there, a short leg – which provides terrific broadcasting possibilities – will complete the 40,000-kilometre journey.

All 8 legs of the 80 Day Race will finish and start in a major city. These cities will host significant events; a combination of competitive challenges for the teams and entertaining elements in a? two-day programme focussed on various target audiences.
