5 January 2018: Shenzhen is the first city to have an all-electric bus fleet in the world.

It also claims to have the largest electric bus fleet, with 16,359 buses (so far) in operation, and the largest fleet of electric taxis, with 12,518 electric vehicles representing 62.5 percent of that overall fleet.

“We will gradually replace the existing fuel-powered cabs with electricity-powered ones and complete the target by 2020, or even ahead of schedule,” said Zheng Jingyu, head of the public transport department of the city’s public transport administration bureau.

To support the massive fleet of electric buses, the city has installed 501 bus charging stations and 8,000 charging poles around the city and in bus stations.

14 November 2017: Shenzhen has been working toward this goal for a while. It already has 14,000 electric buses on the street, with only has a few hundred diesel-powered buses left to replace. They will be decommissioned over the last two months of the year.

BYD is in charge of providing 80% of the electric buses for the city. BYD started the Shenzhen pilot test in 2011. In six years, the giant city with a population of 11.9 million managed to implement a complete switch to full electric buses.

China 100% Electric Bus Sales: 89,546 Electric Buses In 2017

The Chinese market for pure electric buses had approximately 89,546 sales last year. This is down from 115,700 sales in 2016. This means that year on year, the market sales decreased by 23%.

Reports indicate that this decrease is down to multiple factors, but mainly due to changes to electric bus subsidies from Chinese national and local governments.

The Chinese electric bus market is still dominated by two big companies, Yutong and BYD. BYD is the leading electric bus manufacturer, while Yutong is the largest overall bus manufacturer in the country.

    Year China Electric Bus Sales
    2011 1136
    2012 1904
    2013 1672
    2014 12,760
    2015 94,260
    2016 115,700
    2017 89,546
    TOTAL 316,978

42 Articulated Electric BYD Buses Ordered For Nobina in Oslo, Norway

BYD is making more headway in the Nordics with 2 large bus orders in Norway for 42 more of its articulated electric buses for the capital city of Oslo.

Norwegian transit operator Nobina placed the two orders for new BYD electric buses. The new deals are for a total of 42 BYD 18 meter articulated buses that will complement the two pilot buses that started operations in the capital in December of last year. The 42 new buses will all come equipped with rooftop pantograph charging that allows the vehicles to pull up under a charging station — for example, at a bus stop or bus depot — and receive a charge without having to manually plug a charger in at all. Pantographs all but automate the charging process while maintaining the high efficiencies of conductive charging.

BYD Electrifies Xi’an, China With More Than 3,000 Electric Transit Buses

The city of Xi’an, China has been aggressively pushing into zero emission electrified transit over the last 2 years and with its recent purchase of 200 electric BYD double-decker buses, now boasts more than 3,000 electric buses in its fleet. All told, Xi’an now boasts the largest fleet of fully electric buses in northwest China.

The addition of the new double decker buses in Xi’an this week also represents the largest fleet of electrified double-decker buses in the world that will give tourists and local residents alike a new view of the ancient city.

The new fleet of 200 BYD K8S double-decker buses still isn’t large enough to haul around the army of famous terra cotta warriors that still call the city their home, but it will help to assuage the impact of the armies of tourists that flock to the city from all around the world on a daily basis. These modern buses feature single-step low floors on the first floor and expansive views from the upper deck to offer both an increased capacity per bus and a a beautiful way to take in the city.

The city has been a hub for Chinese culture for thousands of years as the eastern end of the famed Silk Road and continues to be a hub for the country today as part of the country’s ‘Belt & Road Initiative’. The Belt & Road Initiative aims to establish the very same transportation backbone for commerce that the Silk Road was so many years ago. The new initiative takes the idea around the world, with plans stretching beyond China’s borders out into Asia, to Europe and Africa.

The new fleet of buses in Xi’an will be put into service on six arterial lines over the next few weeks as transit officials manage the transition amidst the chaos of the Chinese Spring Festival. The new double-decker buses are just the latest step in a much larger push to deploy low-carbon mobility in the city after deploying more than 3,000 BYD electric buses over the last 2 years.

BYD has put its fully electric double-decker buses into service in locations around the world, including in London, where they have been serving the city where double-decker buses are an iconic sight since 2015.

BYD Opens New Global Design Center In Shenzhen

“Technology is BYD’s hard strength, and design will become the soft strength of the company,” said Wang Chuanfu, President and Chairman of BYD.

“Both technology and design must be grasped firmly, to transform BYD’s products from being solely powered by ‘technology’ to leveraging the combined power of ‘technology + design’.”

In the last 16 years, BYD has pivoted from being primarily a supplier of batteries to global consumer electronics manufacturers to building direct relationships with customers through its automotive arm. More recently, that direct relationship has expanded to include residential energy storage, though the bulk of its business is still through larger, commercial, industrial, and utility contracts for its energy storage and solar offerings.

BYD’s technology has always been its core strength upon which it has built functional, cost effective products. The Design Center could take BYD to the next level as it looks to better integrate its technologies into the lives of its customers and establish itself as a serious contender in the world of automotive and consumer electronics design.

Shenzhen: City of the Future. The high-tech life of China’s Silicon Valley

Technology and innovation hub, Shenzhen is known as China’s “silicon valley” and “the city of the future”. Once a fishing village, in just 50 years it grew into a megacity packed with skyscrapers. It hosts international technology exhibitions and forums and attracts creators and investors from around the world, contributing to its population boom. Inventors and engineers working here, create helpful robots, hybrid cars and smart car parks.

China has a saying; to see the past, visit Beijing, to see the present, go to Shanghai but for the future, it’s Shenzhen. Shenzhen has transformed itself from a tiny fishing village to a megacity in just 50 years, its population tripling since the 1990s. The city is a magnet for tech-savvy and inventive dreamers from all across China and the world, because of them Shenzhen has become the “silicon valley” of China, a true technology and innovation hub.

The sprawling metropolis is famed for its skyscrapers, hybrid cars, solar energy and for being home to a great many hi-tech companies. UBTECH is one of them; its focus is on making robots an indispensable part of everyday life. Its key product is the android – a human-like robot that can help out in the workplace and around the home as well as becoming both teacher and playmate for kids.

Shenzhen municipal government encourages citizens to switch to eco-friendly, hybrid cars that use both fuel and solar energy. The vehicles are made by a local manufacturer, BYD. Public transport here is hybrid too helping maintain the city’s ecological reputation, which is among the best in China. The city’s rapid growth demands new solutions for optimising space. Shenzhen is one of the top 10 cities in the world for having the most skyscrapers. Today, its engineers are working on a solution to the ever present problem of parking by developing smart car parks that can automatically place cars in tight spaces while the driver simply walks away.
