The International Year of Forests 2011: Celebrating Forests for People
Geschreven op 11-8-2010 - Erik van Erne. Geplaatst in Agenda, NatuurIn its resolution 61/193 of 20 December 2006, the General Assembly proclaimed 2011 as the International Year of Forests and invited Governments, the United Nations system, relevant non-governmental organisations, the private sector and other actors to make concerted efforts to raise awareness at all levels to strengthen the sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
The International Year of Forests 2011 offers a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the challenges facing many of the world’s forests and the people who depend on them. Great success stories and valuable lessons on how to promote
sustainable forest management already exist. The Year provides a means to bring these voices together and build momentum towards greater public participation in forest activities around the world.

Hope in a Changing Climate
Clip of the winner of the International Forest Film Festival. This documentary demonstrates that it is possible to rehabilitate large-scale damaged ecosystems, to restore ecosystem functions in areas where they have been lost, to fundamentally improve the lives of people who have been trapped in poverty for generations and to sequester carbon naturally.

The Ancient Forests
Clip of the winner of Special Jury Award in the International Forest Film Festival. Can you imagine what it would be like to have your home torn down around you and destroyed? It’s a horrible thought, but that’s exactly what is happening in forests around the world. With an area of forest the size of a football field being destroyed every two seconds, endangered species such as gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees are at risk of extinction within our lifetimes. This Greenpeace film shows all too clearly what this means. With the voices of Sir David Attenborough and Ewan McGregor and actor Andy Serkis, it is a stark reminder of what we stand to lose if we aren’t able to save our ancient forests. But, there is still time.
