International Day for Biological Diversity – Wereld Biodiversiteits Dag: Bomen en Bossen

2010 was het Internationaal Jaar van de Biodiversiteit, uitgeroepen door de Verenigde Naties. Wereldwijd zijn activiteiten georganiseerd om aandacht te vragen voor de achteruitgang in biodiversiteit.
In Nederland hebben de Coalitie Biodiversiteit 2010 en haar partners met veel uiteenlopende activiteiten de term biodiversiteit onder een breed publiek onder de aandacht gebracht.
Ook na dit Biodiversiteitsjaar gaan de Coalitie en haar partners door! De Coalitie Biodiversiteit heeft meer dan 200 partners, afkomstig uit het bedrijfsleven, de overheid en het maatschappelijk middenveld. Het secretariaat en de kerngroep gaan door met hun ondersteunende rol en werken op dit moment aan nieuwe activiteiten, onder andere op 22 mei – Wereldbiodiversiteitsdag.
Dit jaar heeft Wereldbiodiversiteit als thema: Bossen en bomen. Het jaar 2011 is door de Verenigde Naties uitgeroepen tot Internationaal Jaar van de Bomen en Bossen. Er vinden veel activiteiten plaats verspreid over Nederland. The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity.
In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IDB, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.
