Geschreven op 20-4-2010 - Erik van Erne. Geplaatst in MensenrechtenThe Netherlands’ – outgoing – foreign minister, Maxime Verhagen, has welcomed Radio Netherlands Worldwide’s Political Prisoners project, describing it as a great initiative. As he says in a video message, the more people who are aware of human rights violations, the better.
Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen is due to open the Human Rights & (New) Media conference on 19 April 2010. The organisers of this two-day event are the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radio Netherlands Worldwide and True Heroes Films.
Radio Netherlands Worldwide and IDTV came up with the idea of producing eight video reports featuring the family members of political prisoners. In various respects, the prisoners are Most Wanted, which is also the name of the video project. The family members in the eight probing video portraits come from Cuba, Uzbekistan, China, Iran, Eritrea, Indonesia, Azerbaijan and Colombia. They tell the personal stories behind the facts. What was it like to have your loved one detained simply because he was expressing his opinion? What is the family doing to try to draw attention to the case of their imprisoned father, brother, husband or son?
A special, unobtrusive camera had to be used because of the dangerous circumstances under which the films were recorded. The reports are available on this web site in seven languages. The Most Wanted video project is part of a separate dossier about political prisoners on the RNW web site. The dossier is available in seven languages and serves as a journalistic platform with news and discussions about political prisoners. You are encouraged to submit your ideas, stories and pictures.
