UNEP Seal the Deal: Power Green Growth, Protect the Planet

Zo, de grote en wie weet, alles beslissende Klimaatconferentie COP15 in Kopenhagen nadert met rasse schreden en dat is voor tal van organisaties het sein om in actie te komen. Het doel: u en mij mobiliseren om steun te betuigen. De campagne Seal the Deal is een initiatief van de United Nations.

Op zich natuurlijk heel goed dat er veel aandacht is voor de klimaatproblemen in de aanloop naar die grote Klimaattop, maar waar het werkelijk om gaat is de politieke bereidheid om over de eigen, nationale, belangen heen te kijken. En daar gaat het voorlopig nog behoorlijk mis. De laatste Klimaattop in Bonn heeft eigenlijk niets opgeleverd. Datzelfde kan worden geconcludeerd uit de Klimaattop in Poznan en die op Bali. Veel gepraat, weinig tot niets besloten en dan weer gewoon naar huis, doorgaan zoals altijd.. Zie ook: De Copenhagen Climate Conference 2009: COP15

Wetenschappers luiden overal in de wereld massaal de alarmbel. De klimaatverandering gaat sneller dan verwacht en de gevolgen zijn groter dan ooit werd gedacht. En niet onbelangrijk: steeds vaker wordt onderkend en vastgesteld dat die gevolgen van de klimaatverandering er al zijn. Nu, dus en niet ergens ver weg in de toekomst.

Of de Seal the Deal campagne echt effect zal hebben en zal bijdragen aan een echte deal in Copenhagen, vraag ik mij af, maar ik heb toch maar even de petitie ondertekend.    I wish I had more hope for the outcome of the Conference. Which is why I am throwing everything including the kitchen sink to make it happen. We do not have the luxury to sit back and see what will happen. We have done that and the outcome only became bleaker. So I encourage the politicians to do something they have never done before and take a bold step in advancement instead of the” safe and sorry, too little too late”.
