UN Global Compact – Symposium Duurzaamheid & Innovatie

Het jaarlijkse symposium van het Global Compact Netwerk Nederland wordt dit keer georganiseerd in samenwerking met Deloitte en IUCN/Leaders for Nature en zal plaatsvinden op 19 oktober aanstaande in het Mediaplaza te Utrecht.
Duurzame ontwikkeling daagt de zakenwereld uit tot nieuwe en innovatieve ideeën op strategisch, operatief en technisch vlak: het gaat om de toekomstige samenwerking en de samenleving op globaal, regionaal en locaal niveau. Bedrijfsmodellen die meer oog hebben voor de onvervulde behoeften van ontwikkelingslanden en landen met een opkomende economie vormen slechts één van de aanjagers van deze ontwikkeling. De geglobaliseerde wereld heeft behoefte aan een herijking van strategieën, bedrijfsmodellen en producten in relatie tot ontwikkelingslanden en opkomende markten, want zij vormen de snelst groeiende markten van de komende decennia.
Ofschoon de financiële crisis op dit ogenblik veel aandacht vergt van bedrijven, krijgt men steeds meer inzicht in de domino-effecten die de onderlinge samenhang tussen verschillende sectoren van de wereldeconomie kan creëren en er is schokkend bewijs dat meer midden tot lange termijn domino-effecten dringend onze aandacht nodig hebben, evenals afbreuk van het milieu, waarin klimaatverandering slechts één effect is van al reeds vele oorzaken, demografische effecten, armoede en toename van urbanisatie.
Op termijn kunnen deze trends markten sterk ontregelen en hun verdere ontwikkeling in gevaar brengen. Het bewijs dat deze effecten op de middenlange en lange termijn dringend onze aandacht nodig hebben stapelt zich op. Innovatie in verschillende gebieden is een randvoorwaarde voor succes en het doorvoeren van diepgaande veranderingen. Het symposium wil een platform bieden voor de manier waarop innovatie duurzame ontwikkeling naar een hoger niveau kan tillen.
15 februari 2008: Op 17 maart staat het symposium “Partnerships for Development” van het Nederlands Netwerk van UN Global Compact op de agenda. Partnerships zijn inmiddels geaccepteerd als instrument om belangrijke maatschappelijke kwesties aan te pakken. Tijd dus om wat op te steken van de praktijkervaringen met partnerships.
Het doel van het symposium is om informatie uit te wisselen waarmee plannen voor een partnership efficiënter en effectiever tot uitvoering gebracht kunnen worden. De opzet is om deelnemers van een aantal partnerships tussen bedrijven, overheid en NGOs hun ervaringen te laten delen. Op basis hiervan worden tijdens de middag lessons learned en do’s en don’ts opstellen.
Het wordt een interactieve middag voor sprekers en deelnemers. Het programma bestaat uit plenaire gedeeltes en workshopsessies. De middag zal worden afgesloten met een discussie tussen Ruud Treffers (Ontwikkelingssamenwerking), René Grotenhuis (Directeur Cordaid) en Mike Wilkinson (Royal Dutch Shell, Vice President Sustainable Development) over de rollen, bijdragen en verwachtingen van de partijen in een partnership.

On December 1, NIBC Bank committed to participate in the UN Global Compact. The UN Global Compact is a strategic initiative for businesses that asks them to embrace, support and enact, within their sphere of influence, ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
NIBC’s commitment to the Global Compact is in line with our existing business principles and sustainability policy framework. We are committed to integrate sustainability in our business approach and consider these principles as basis for responsible provision of financial services.
Our principles include the support and respect of the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights, the effective abolition of child labour, initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility and the belief that businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

More then 2000 companies have been expelled from the United Nations Global Compact
2,048 companies from around the world have been expelled from the United Nations Global Compact for repeated failure to communicate on progress in integrating the initiative’s ten sustainability principles into their strategies and operations.
The number was reached following the recent expulsion of more than 200 companies at the end of a 2010 moratorium on expulsions in less developed countries, a short-term measure to explore solutions to a systemic lack of disclosure in certain markets. (See the list of expelled companies).
The Global Compact requires participating businesses to communicate every year with stakeholders on their progress in integrating the ten principles. Companies that do not issue a Communication on Progress (COP) for two consecutive years face expulsion and must reapply for participation in the initiative. Following the recent expulsion, the total number of active business participants in the Global Compact stands at 6,066 companies in 132 countries.

UN Secretary-General Launches New Platform for Corporate Sustainability Leadership: Global Compact LEAD
The executives represent a group of 54 companies, all participants of the UN Global Compact, that have made an ambitious commitment to work towards implementation of the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership, a comprehensive roadmap outlining roughly 50 concrete actions businesses can take to achieve greater sustainability. The Blueprint was first introduced by the Global Compact in June 2010.
Global Compact LEAD companies are further expected to share their knowledge through the initiative’s local networks in more than 90 countries and to report on their activities at an advanced level. Participants also pledge to work more actively with United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, many of which have built significant business partnership capacities in recent years, recognizing the critical role of business in addressing global challenges.
“From the beginning, the Global Compact has been driven by business leaders willing to move beyond the status quo,” the Secretary-General said in his remarks to the group. “Through Global Compact LEAD, you can help guide the way to the level of sustainability performance our world requires from business today.”
“The launch of Global Compact LEAD stresses the key role leading Global Compact participants have already played in advancing corporate responsibility around the world,” said Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “At the same time, Global Compact LEAD responds to the critical need for these leaders to scale up their efforts so that we can achieve tangible impact on global challenges.” Source: UN Global Compact

Unilever, Shell en Heineken in United Nations Duurzaamheidskopgroep Global Compact LEAD
Shell, Heineken en Unilever binden samen met 51 andere multinationals de strijd aan tegen klimaatverandering, corruptie, rechten van kinderen en armoede. De groep heeft zich verenigd in het VN initiatief Global Compact LEAD. Deelname aan Global Compact LEAD is een uitdaging voor maatschappelijk betrokken bedrijven om verder te gaan, te experimenteren, te innoveren en ervaringen uit te wisselen, zowel successen als mislukkingen, aldus de organisatie.
Het programma werd deze week gelanceerd door de chef van de VN Ban Ki-moon tijdens het World Economic Forum in Davos en omvat een stappenplan met 49 concrete acties die bedrijven kunnen uitvoeren voor meer duurzaamheid. De Blueprint for Sustainable Leadership, zoals het programma is gedoopt, bouwt op het besef dat bedrijven belangrijk zijn bij duurzaamheid. Onderwerpen als duurzaamheid, mensenrechten, werk en anti-corruptie staan bij steeds meer bedrijven hoog op de agenda, maar er is nog geen omslagpunt bereikt, vinden de VN.
