Greening The Blue“The UN system is collectively developing a climate-neutral approach for its premises and operations.

The responsibility for the future lies in our hands. Let’s begin change at home.” Ban Ki-moon, Moving Towards a Climate Neutral UN.

Find out about the mandate to create a more sustainable United Nations, and the origin of the Issue Management Group on Sustainability Management. Details of the UN system can be found here, as well as key policy documents and useful statistics. Find out how the UN measures its environmental impacts, particularly its greenhouse gas emissions, including details of boundaries. Information on how the UN is reducing the environmental impact of its work across a number of functions and activities including travel, buildings, procurement, staff engagement, meetings, distance working, and ICT. You can also read about the first generation of UN organization emission reduction plans. The UN has made a commitment to ‘move towards climate neutrality’. Investigating the role of offsets is a key condition to doing that.

Down to earth: Many UN staff have to travel regularly just to get their jobs done. Yet travel is responsible for 61% of the UN’s greenhouse gas emissions – 48% from air travel and the remainder from road and rail travel. Find out how you can reduce your travel-related carbon-footprint, and what the UN is doing to help you…

Less is more: Using too many resources is at the heart of the sustainability challenge facing the planet. Yet we all have the power to use resources in better, more efficient ways. Find out how you can help through the choices and decisions you make every day at work…

Switch it off: Electricity accounts for 14% of the UN’s greenhouse gas emissions. Obviously electricity provides light, heat and cooling in our offices, whilst powering all our office equipment such as printers, photocopiers, telephones and computers. ‘Switch it off’ shows how you can help to reduce the amount of energy the UN uses, to support efforts being taken in your organization…

Bon appetit: We are what we eat. So to be truly sustainable we need to eat better. The choices you make daily – whether you provide your own lunch, eat in the canteen or go out – can have a big impact on the environment. Follow our tips to make sure you choose the BEST lunch available…

Green champions: Are you interested in green issues? Do you think there’s more to be done in your office to reduce environmental impacts? Would you like to get more involved? If so, you could become a Green Champion and play a key role in moving the UN towards ever greater sustainability… Source: UN Greening the Blue

Greening the Blue has been nominated for ‘Best Website’ by the judges of the IVCA Clarion Awards

The IVCA – the International Visual Communications Association – is a not-for-profit membership organization representing the creators and commissioners of multimedia projects for the corporate and public sectors. Each year, the organization hosts the prestigious Clarion Awards which celebrate communications that promote CSR, diversity, sustainability, community development and health issues in the public, social enterprise, charity and corporate sectors. Greening the Blue has been nominated under the ‘Websites’ category.

Greening the Blue was launched on World Environment Day 2010. The website was launched in response to the call from the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon for all UN agencies, funds and programmes to become climate neutral and ‘go green’ and the site shows what’s been achieved, what’s happening next and how staff can get involved. The website has been developed on behalf of the Sustainable United Nations team, part of the United Nations Environment Programme and was designed and built by the digital agency Enable Interactive.

UN.org – the main website for the UN system – launched a new web-page on its sustainability performance.

The new web-page, which is currently available in English and French, provides information on the UN Climate Neutral Strategy and progress on its implementation. The sustainability page reflects the outcome of the last meeting of the UN Communications Group, at which the UN Directors of Communication committed to support Greening the Blue (the UN’s outreach programme for a sustainable UN) and confirm the inclusion of “sustainability” pages we on every UN organization and specialized agency website.
