Geschreven op 27-10-2010 - Erik van Erne. Geplaatst in KlimaatAround the world, people are fighting climate change in extraordinary ways. In Thailand, Oxfam is working with rice farming communities. Innovative water pumps and new farming techniques are just two of the ways in which people are adapting.
But while communities from across the globe crack on with the job, world leaders are taking an extraordinary amount of time to deliver what they’ve promised — a new Climate Fund. If set up properly, the Climate Fund could deliver cash to help communities avoid the worst effects of climate change. But since pledging their support in late 2009, world leaders have made little progress in getting the idea off the ground.
Thailand’s emotively-named ‘Weeping Plain’ is a vast, barren area in the north-east of the country. It spans more than 800,000 acres across five provinces — and, although conditions here are often dry, the regular onset of seasonal rains creates an ideal environment for growing world-famous jasmine rice. However, in recent years, the effects of climate change have begun to take hold, with a devastating impact on people’s lives. Nonetheless, people are fighting climate change in extraordinary ways. Oxfam is working with rice farming communities and this animation shows how innovative water pumps and new farming techniques are helping people to adapt.
