In 1991, my husband and I lost our 5-year-old daughter, Colette, to a non-genetic form of cancer called Wilm’s Tumor. Four years later, in March of 1995, we came across the newly released study, “Parental Exposure to Pesticides and Risk of Wilm’s Tumor in Brazil” published by the American Journal of Epidemiology. Having been exposed to pesticides during my pregnancy, this study confirmed to us that the grossly premature death of our daughter could have been prevented.
As a parent, you would do anything, you would move mountains, to protect your child. And our children depend on us to keep them safe. My husband and I decided to take our personal tragedy and transform it into something positive that would help protect all children. With the support of our closest friends, we founded the organization Healthy Child Healthy World nearly twenty years ago, and have fought to bring to light the dangers of environmental toxins.
Others out there are also fighting. One such kindred activist, Penelope Jagessar Chaffer, is a multi-award winning documentarian, wife, and mother. She discovered the threat five years ago and has done everything in her power to raise awareness and initiate social empowerment.
