Wind PowerWind power is extracted from air flow using wind turbines or sails to produce mechanical or electrical power. 

Wind power as an alternative to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and uses little land.

The net effects on the environment are generally less problematic than those from nonrenewable power sources.

Large wind farms can consist of hundreds of individual wind turbines which are connected to the electric power transmission network. Gansu Wind Farm, the largest wind farm in the world, has several thousands of turbines. Onshore wind is an inexpensive source of electricity, competitive with or in many places cheaper than coal, gas or fossil fuel plants.

Offshore wind is steadier and stronger than on land, and offshore farms have less visual impact, but construction and maintenance costs are considerably higher. Small onshore wind farms can feed some energy into the grid or provide electricity to isolated off-grid locations. Source: Wikipedia

A wind farm or wind park is a group of wind turbines in the same location used to produce energy. A large wind farm may consist of several hundred individual wind turbines and cover an extended area of hundreds of square miles, but the land between the turbines may be used for agricultural or other purposes. A wind farm can also be located offshore.

Many of the largest operational onshore wind farms are located in the United States and China. For example, the Gansu Wind Farm in China has a capacity of over 5,000 MW of power with a goal of 20,000 MW by 2020.

    China Planning 6 Gigawatt Ulanqab Wind Farm in Siziwangqi, Wulanchabu City, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region

    China’s State Power Investment Corporation has given the go-ahead for what could one of the world’s largest onshore wind farms, a 6 gigawatt (GW) subsidy-free behemoth set to be developed in Mongolia and which will help power the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

    The 6 GW Ulanqab Wind Power Base, which will be funded and built by the State Power Investment Corporation, was given approval by the Wulanchabu Municipal Development and Reform Commission on December 29. The project is set to be built in Siziwangqi, Wulanchabu City, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and will be built over 3,800 square-kilometers at a total investment of 42.544 billion yuan ($6.3 billion).
