The sOccket Captures Energy From Playing Soccer by Four Students of Harvard University

sOccketThe sOccket is a fun, portable energy-harvesting power source in the form of a soccer ball. What does it do? sOccket captures the energy from impact that is normally lost to the environment when the soccer ball is kicked, dribbled, thrown (you get the picture)and stores this energy for later use.
                    
We’re currently in the prototyping stages, but this past summer we piloted a youth program in several areas of Durban, South Africa and we just recently completed a study of soccer play in households in Nairobi,Kenya. We also eventually plan to develop a high-end sOccket for purchase in the U.S. and Europe, so stay tuned!

There is a huge need for cheap, clean, simple, off-grid energy solutions that are available for immediate use. In most African countries, 95% of the population is living off-grid with no access to electricity (World Bank Millennium Goals Report, 2006). With sOccket, people in developing nations will no longer need to walk 3 hours simply to charge their cell phones. The power will—quite literally—be in their hands.

sOccket will also benefit its users’ health: More than 1 billion people around the world rely on kerosene lamps to light their homes and businesses when the sun goes down. Not only is kerosene expensive, but its flames are dangerous and the smoke poses serious health risks. In fact, respiratory infections account for the largest percentage of childhood deaths in developing nations–more than AIDS, and more than malaria. Thus sOccket is a source  of clean energy derived from healthy activity.

The sOccket team began as one of many groups in an engineering sciences class at Harvard University. The task: acknowledge a need and find a solution. Grouped together because of their experience in the developing world and global health, they understood the need firsthand, but the solution was not so easy. After months of failed ideas, finally something clicked–everyone loves to play soccer–but what if their soccer ball did more? And the rest is history.
