The EP100: World’s Most Influential Businesses Are Going to Double Their Energy Productivity

EP100 is a global, collaborative initiative by The Climate Group of influential businesses that pledge to double their energy productivity.

By doubling the economic output from every unit of energy consumed, companies set a bold target, demonstrating climate leadership while reaping the benefits of lower energy costs.

Business accounts for around half of the electricity used worldwide. By focusing on energy productivity outcomes, corporates can reduce their own energy demand and significantly contribute to reducing energy demand globally. Furthermore, significantly improving energy productivity worldwide will help get us halfway to the goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. It’s critical that businesses lead the way.

By doubling energy productivity, corporations are also enhancing their resilience and boosting competitiveness, all while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, creating jobs, and improving energy security.

From financial services firms to manufacturers of heavy equipment and primary materials, companies joining EP100 recognize that doubling energy productivity improves corporate stability and profitability, while also delivering reputational benefits and contributing to the global fight against climate change. Simply put, doubling energy productivity makes good business sense. The businesses that joined the EP100 initiative are: Covestro, Cree, Dalmia Cement, Danfoss, Hongbo, H&M, Johnson Controls, LandSec, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India, Swiss Re and Woolworths Holdings

EP100 shares this compelling business case, and showcases the leadership of companies making progress on energy productivity. EP100 is delivered by The Climate Group in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy and is part of of the We Mean Business coalition.

Doubling Energy Productivity in the US by 2030 will Save $327 Billion a Year

Doubling energy productivity in the US by 2030 will save US$327 billion a year in energy costs, add 1.3 million jobs, and reduce CO2 emissions by 33% below 2005 levels – a study finds.

American Energy Productivity, a report from the Rhodium Group prepared on behalf of the Alliance to Save Energy, indicates that this ambitious goal requires an annual improvement in energy productivity of 3.7% between 2013 and 2030.

The US “has achieved this rate of productivity improvement in the past, but never for such a sustained period of time,” the authors warn.

However, decoupling energy demand and economic growth is both technically and economically possible, the study states, and will “deliver an 18% reduction in overall US energy demand by 2030 relative to 2011 levels while sustaining -if not improving- trend economic growth.”
