Chinese Bullet TrainA brilliant new Chinese train innovation – get on & off the bullet train without the train stopping. No time is wasted. The bullet train is moving all the time. If there are 30 stations between Beijing and Guangzhou, just stopping and accelerating again at each station will waste both energy and time. A mere 5 min stop per station will result in a total loss of 5 min x 30 stations or 2.5 hours of train journey time!

For those who are boarding the train : The passengers at a station embarks onto to a connector cabin way before the train even arrives at the station. When the train arrives, it will not stop at all. It just slows down to pick up the connector cabin which will move with the train on the roof of the train.

While the train is still moving away from the station, those passengers will board the train from the connector cabin mounted on the train’s roof. After fully unloading all its passengers, the cabin connector cabin will be moved to the back of the train so that the next batch of outgoing passengers who want to alight at the next station will board the connector cabin at the rear of the train roof.

For those who are getting off: As stated after fully unloading all its passengers, the cabin connector cabin will be moved to the back of the train so that the next batch of outgoing passengers who want to alight at the next station will board the connector cabin at the rear of the train roof. When the train arrives at the next station, it will simply drop the whole connector cabin at the station itself and leave it behind at the station. The outgoing passengers can take their own time to disembark at the station while the train had already left. At the same time, the train will pick up the incoming embarking passengers on another connector cabin in the front part of the train’s roof. So the train will always drop one connector cabin at the rear of its roof and pick up a new connector cabin in the front part of the train’s roof at each station.

    Mooi idee! Nice Idea! Small problem with what you do with the existing electric overhead lines and the power connectors on train as well as any low bridges that the train may go through, but in China rebuilding is never a problem.

    I think that this, along with the straddling bus are ideas that are borne out of a generation that has no idea of the existing – it does not need to care about the existing – you just demolish it to make way for your brilliant innovation.

    A more useful way of doing it would be to have the last carriage that is the drop on, drop off, at first station people get into last carriage to be dropped off, train slows to say 50/hour, disconnects last carriage that has own motricity, this gets shunted into appropriate platform at station. At same station, another final carriage has people waiting, this waits for train to pass, and accelerates up to it to join the train and bolts on. I am sure this has been thought of before but was abandoned. On dedicated high speed lines it could be an option as you don’t have to worry about other traffic on the same line on group of platforms. Much less dangerous and stupid than adding a overhead compartment.

    Of course, if for some reason final carriage fails to disconnect or fails to start the train would have to stop at the station. But failure on the other system is no better and actually worse, as the entire train is then forced to revert to normal mode for the whole duration of the journey (or be abandoned for safety reasons). Also with the system above, if the train is really crowded, you can make the feeder carriages two or three long.

    Good that the issue is under consideration. Perhaps a bit more thought needed. When this all goes wrong it’s going to get very messy
