Although algae are widely used in biotechnology and agriculture in Europe and worldwide, and the term algae appears in multiple legal documents, the term as such is poorly defined. Algae are very diverse group of organisms, found almost everywhere on the planet. Based on common use the term algae includes representatives from prokariotes (the cyanobacteria) and from several kingdoms of the eukariotes, whereby no scientific agreement currently exists on the exact taxonomic classification of those multiple eukaryote kingdoms.
Every year the European algae scene meets at the AlgaEurope conference. AlgaEurope offers a unique opportunity for an exchange between academia and industry, established in a networking-based environment that will explore sector’s evolution worldwide as well as the main European players. Currently, there are several European projects, from lab scale to demonstration plants and commercial facilities, aiming to accelerate the commercialization of algal products.

Algae contain proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and other elements that can be used as ingredients for a large range of sectors from food & feed to nutraceutical & cosmeceuticals to biofuels. Algo-biorefineries can maximize the potential of algae applications and open new opportunities.
The valorization of added-value products from algae is setting the conditions for the development of small or niche markets, which eventually can grow to larger scale.

24 oktober 2010: Op 1 en 2 december 2010 staat voor de vierde keer het Internationale Algencongres op het programma in het Regardz Planetarium congrescentrum in Amsterdam. Het internationale algencongres neemt alle congresgangers dit keer mee op reis in de zee aan onderwerpen over dit veelzijdige en veelbelovende minuscule organisme. Het thema van deze keer is dan ook: Alles over Algen.
De organisatie van het Internationale Algencongres heeft dit keer dan ook vrijwel alle mogelijke algenthema’s in de aanbieding. Zo zijn sprekers van overal ter wereld uitgenodigd om de meest interessante algenprojecten die in diverse landen gaande zijn, wereldkundig te maken. Enkele van die landen waar momenteel grote projecten plaatsvinden zijn Australië, Spanje, Duitsland en Nederland. Andere onderwerpen zijn het GMO onderzoek naar algen; een verdiepingsessie voor kansrijke algenmarkten als voedsel, diervoeders, brandstof, eiwitvervangers, fosfaatmeststof en afvalverwerking; een brede visie op de duurzaamheid van watercultures en de rol die algen hierin kunnen spelen. Natuurlijk komen ook alle facetten van de productieprocessen en -technieken aangaande algen aan de orde.
Dit ruime programma-aanbod maakt duidelijk: Amsterdam is the place to be voor iedereen die een toekomst heeft en ziet in algen. Het deelnemerspubliek voor de congresgangers is dan ook enorm breed. Dit is eveneens terug te zien is aan opkomst bij de edities van de afgelopen jaren: onderwijsinstellingen, onderzoekcentra, industrieën, landbouw, overheden ze waren allemaal aanwezig en afkomstig uit vele wereldlanden. Het doel is om te informeren over de uitdagingen op het gebied van algen en wat de toekomstmogelijkheden zijn in deze branche. Algen zijn microscopisch kleine plantjes, die aan de basis van de voedselketen staan. Toepassing van algen in de voeding van mens en dier biedt grote mogelijkheden. Zo kan de voedselketen worden verkort, kunnen er enorme hoeveelheden CO2 worden vastgelegd en kan er een hoge productie aan biomassa per ha. worden bereikt. Algen bieden dus grote kansen voor diverse toekomstige toepassingsmogelijkheden, zoals in biobrandstoffen en zelfs in levering van grondstoffen aan elektriciteitsproducenten.
Het enorme potentieel van algen, de milieuvriendelijke kenmerken en de interesse uit de markt zijn de belangrijkste redenen om de belanghebbenden bij elkaar te brengen tijdens een congres. Voor meer informatie.
