The Chinese city of Huainan is best known for its coal reserves, but it is also now the place where the world’s largest floating solar farm is found, sitting atop a coal mine.

This solar farm is currently generating electricity. With a 40-megawatt power plant running 120,000 solar panels, this facility will yield some interesting statistics in the near future. The US$45 million investment already has the potential to power around 15,000 homes for a full year. All things considered, this is by far one of the largest renewable energy operations in the world today.

China has installed 24.4 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV in the first six months of 2017, including an extraordinary 13.5GW in the month of June alone, as developers rushed to complete installations to capitalise on a higher feed-in tariff that expired on July 1.

According to the data from the China PV Industry Association (CPIA), the 24.4GW of new capacity — a combination of large and small scale — represented an increase of 9% year on year. It is also equivalent capacity to Australia’s entire coal fleet, and more than four times its installed solar capacity.

The boost in installations was also accompanied by a 28% jump in the amount of solar cells produced in the first half to 32GW, while the output of solar modules rose 26% to 34GW.

China installed a record 24.4 gigawatts worth of new solar capacity across the first half of 2017, according to new figures from the country’s solar PV association, a new year-on-year record of 9% up on 2016’s own record installation numbers.

At this rate, if things continue the way they have been going over the first half of the year, and policy continues to drive the installation of renewable energy located central to where it is needed, solar may well again beat the massive 34 GW installed in 2016 — a figure which was up 126% on 2015’s solar installations, and well up on analyst predictions.

China switched on the world’s largest floating solar plant in May. The solar panels spread over the surface of water flooding a defunct coal mining site near the city of Huainan in China’s eastern Anhui province. Built by Sungrow Power Supply, with its full capacity of 40 megawatts, the plant can provide electricity for more than 15,000 homes.
