The Seed Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development: Turning Ideas into Impact

seed-10years-flagship-reportThe SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development is an annual awards scheme designed to find the most promising, innovative and locally-led start-up social and environmental enterprises in countries with developing and emerging economies.

Ten years ago, at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in New York, 5 enterprises received the first SEED Awards. They were chosen, from a pool of over 260 entries from 66 countries, for their potential to advance sustainable development in their communities and contribute to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. At the Ceremony, Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the time said: “The time for talking is over; the time for action is now. If we are to deliver sustainable development, achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 and overcome poverty, we need partnerships”.

’Action’ has been the keyword since then. Over the last ten years, SEED has recognised more than 200 SEED Winners spread over 40 countries and helped them scale-up through tailored capacity building, involving over 550 communities, non-governmental organisations, businesses and public authorities. These social and green enterprises are living proof that entrepreneurial partnerships between various stakeholders can create innovative and novel solutions for delivering sustainable development at the grassroots.

The global partnership surveyed 175 enterprises that have won a SEED Award within the last ten years and analysed their economic success and the impact on the environment and the community they operate in. Today, 70 per cent of the interviewed enterprises from 37 countries meet their strategic goals or even exceed them.

Furthermore SEED Winners create thousands of jobs along their value chain, providing often especially women and the youth alternative income opportunities. With their positive impacts on local communities they have become frontrunners of sustainable development.

Turning Ideas into Impact: Setting the Stage for the next 10 Years of Green and Inclusive Growth through Entrepreneurship is not just the title of this publication. It expresses our commitment to global action for social and environmental good, and development.

SEED and UNEP believe that entrepreneurship and partnerships will be central to the realisation of sustainable development in the post-2015 world. Download the full report.
