Human Rights Day

Acting alone or in groups within their communities, every day human rights defenders work to end discrimination by campaigning for equitable and effective laws, reporting and investigating human rights violations and supporting victims. While some human rights defenders are internationally renowned, many remain anonymous and undertake their work often at great personal risk to themselves and their families.
2 december 2007: Op 10 december is het weer Human Rights Day. Op zich ook weer een goed initiatief om op één dag in het jaar aandacht te besteden aan de rechten van de mens. De United Nations site laat zien hoe begaan men is. Niet meer bijgewerkt sinds 2006 !
Dat daar heel veel mee aan de hand is, kunt u met regelmaat in de media zien. Human Rights Watch geeft inzicht in de vele misstanden in de wereld.
Ik krijg toch vaak het gevoel dat alle die speciale dagen zelfs een beetje averechts werken. Even veel aandacht. We zijn allemaal weer even bij de les. Denken even aan de ellende van anderen. Daarna gaan we met z’n allen weer over tot de orde van de dag en gaat de schending van de rechten van mensen gewoon door.

Human Rights Day 2010
Survival has today released two short films highlighting the plight of the Guarani Indians in Brazil, to mark UN Human Rights Day (December 10th).
The film ‘One must have courage’ reveals the Guarani’s determination that their lands, which have been stolen from them to make way for ranches, soya and sugarcane plantations, must be returned to them.
In the film ‘The Gunmen’, Guarani express their anger and apprehension as the ranchers who have taken over their lands employ gunmen to shoot at them. One Guarani woman states, ‘Imagine the gunmen’s bullets flying around all the time… at night time they could hit a child, a woman, or anyone’.
