MTV Networks is presenting “Hope for Haiti,” a global telethon to air commercial-free across ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, The CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT next Friday at 8pm ET/PT. “Hope for Haiti” will be led by CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Haiti, George Clooney in Los Angeles, and Wyclef Jean in New York City.

The two-hour telethon will feature musical performances and celebrity appearances as well as live news reports from CNN.

Wyclef Jean leaves Haiti’s presidential race

Hip hop singer Wyclef Jean has officially withdrawn his candidacy for president of Haiti. The 40-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist said in a statement on Tuesday that he is leaving Haitian politics to promote a new album.

“This was not an easy conclusion to reach,” the former Fugees singer said, “but it is one that was thoughtfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors.”

Cholera epidemic hits Haiti: pictures by The Frame

A cholera epidemic was spreading in central Haiti on Friday as aid groups rushed doctors and supplies to fight the country’s deadliest health crisis since January’s earthquake. At least 150 people have died and more than 1,500 others are ill. The first two cases of the disease outside the rural Artibonite region were confirmed in Arcahaie, a town that is closer to the quake-devastated capital, Port-au-Prince. Officials are concerned the outbreak could reach the squalid tarp camps where hundreds of thousands of quake survivors live in the capital. Scores of patients lay on the floor awaiting treatment at the St. Nicholas hospital in the seaside city of St. Marc, some of them brushing away flies on mattresses stained with human feces. In Haiti, Capital Braces for a Cholera Outbreak

Diarrhea, while a common ailment here, is a symptom of cholera. And anxiety has been growing fiercely that the cholera epidemic, which began last week in the northwest of Haiti, will soon strike the earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

“It travels with the speed of lightning, I’ve heard, and it can kill a person in four hours,” said Jean Michel Maximilien, a camp leader. “So of course we are all on edge.”

For now, the cholera outbreak, with more than 250 deaths and more than 3,100 confirmed cases, has been contained to the central rural regions around the Artibonite River, 60 miles north of the capital. But Port-au-Prince is tensely preparing for its arrival in the densely populated slums and tent camps here, with treatment centers being established, soap and water purification tablets being distributed and public safety announcements stressing hygiene. Nearly 10,000 cholera cases reported in Haiti as death toll rises

Some 9,971 cases of cholera, including 643 deaths, have been confirmed in Haiti, the United Nations humanitarian office reported today, citing figures provide by the Government, which also said that cases of the disease have been identified in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Poor sanitary conditions in many parts of the country, floods and mud flows associated with Hurricane Tomas, which swept past the Caribbean nation over the weekend, are likely to accelerate the spread of the disease, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in an update.

Haiti’s cholera cases approach 50,000 as preparations for polls continue

The number of reported cases of cholera in Haiti is now approaching 50,000, but health experts have cautioned that the figure could be higher because data on the epidemic has not been received from some rural communities, a United Nations relief official said today. Nigel Fisher, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti, said that epidemiologists in the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) – the regional arm of the World Health Organization (WHO) – estimate that the number of cases could be as high as 70,000.

The death toll, as of yesterday, stood at 1,200, but the experts have said that the disease might have claimed as many as 2,000 people, with some fatalities in remote areas going unreported.

Speaking via a video link from the capital, Port-au-Prince, Mr. Fisher told a news conference in New York that PAHO epidemiologists have also revised their projections of the spread of the disease and now anticipate that cases could rise to 200,000 over the next three months. The experts had earlier estimated that the number of cases could rise to that figure in six months.

“This epidemic is moving faster,” Mr. Fisher said. Source: UN

Haiti will continue to need strong international support, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon tells Security Council

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pledged the continued assistance of the United Nations for Haiti, which, while having made significant gains in recent months, still faces a number of daunting challenges such as reviving its crippled economy and strengthening the rule of law.

“The United Nations will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Haitian Government and people in the noble and necessary work of building a more just and prosperous future,” Mr. Ban stated during an open debate of the Security Council on Haiti.

WikiLeaks Cables that Reveal “Secret History” of U.S. Bullying in Haiti

The Nation magazine, in partnership with the Haitian weekly newspaper, Haïti Liberté, has launched a series of reports based on more than 19,000 classified U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. Democracy Now! interviews the report authors, Kim Ives and Dan Coughlin, both longtime Haiti correspondents. Called “The PetroCaribe Files,” the series begins with an exposé of how the United States—with pressure from Exxon and Chevron—tried to interfere with an oil agreement between Haiti and Venezuela that would save Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, $100 million per year. “It is really amazing to see an ambassador pushing around a president, and all his officials telling them what to do, trying to tell them what Haiti’s interests are. It is the epitome of arrogance,” says Ives.
