The Next Generation 2011 Design Competion: Design a Zero Environmental Footprint
Geschreven op 1-10-2010 - Erik van Erne. Geplaatst in DesignThe Next Generation Design Competion ask you to design a Zero Environmental Footprint for this building, considering any scale of intervention—from windows to light fixtures to interior spaces to building envelope to urban context.
Focus on one of these scales and work it through thoroughly. The Living Building Challenge 2.0, put forth by the International Living Building Institute, is a useful guideline for thinking holistically about buildings (inside and outside), their urban context, regional conditions, resource use, the people who use them (and visit them).
Design for Site, Water, Energy, Health, Materials, Equity, Beauty is at the core of the Living Building Challenge, and your challenge.
Propose using minimal amounts of energy from the grid by bringing the building’s existing features up to 21st century standards Work toward making the building self-sufficient, including its use of energy and water.
Choose the renewable energy that’s most appropriate for the site. Could it be wind, solar, and/or geothermal?
Employ high tech methods, like smart meters, to redistribute energy and consider different needs during a 24-hour day; and be mindful of seasonal conditions.
Create Teachable Moments in the building and its surroundings like proposing a communication program that tells the story of the building’s Zero Environmental Footprint Use smart technologies wherever possible.
