YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011: Grand Finale at The Sydney Opera House

28 March 2011: On March 20, the Grand Finale of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011 was held at Sydney Opera House and live-streamed to the world on YouTube.

During the week-long festival leading up to the finale, 101 musicians from 33 countries joined together for the first time—immersed in new cultural experiences, musical mentorship and performances in one of the world’s most iconic symbols of the arts.

During the three-and-a-half hour Grand Finale—and as people in different timezones awoke to re-broadcasts—the event was streamed 33 million times around the world to 189 countries. This included 2.8 million mobile live-streams—making it one of our biggest ever streaming events to date, on mobile and desktop. That means the event was streamed to nearly one-and-a-half times the entire population of Australia, where the event took place. One of the goals of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra is to make classical music accessible; the total data transferred by the stream was a whopping 422 terabytes—the equivalent of 145 million MP3 files of classical music being emailed around the world.

14 januari 2010: Your votes are in. The professionals have had their say. And now, 101 people from more than 30 countries around the world are heading to Sydney Opera House to perform together in March as the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011.

These final 101 outstanding musicians—who range in age from 14 to 49, and hail from five different continents—have emerged from the 336 finalists selected last month by partner orchestras worldwide (including London Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker and Sydney Symphony). Your votes on those finalists then helped artistic advisor Tilson Thomas and composer Mason Bates settle on the final line-up.

Among the final group is a vuvuzela-fixated trombonist from Germany, an Arizona-based clarinetist who has never left the U.S. and a Guzheng player from China, whose instrument is one a lot of the world has never seen or heard before. They’ll come together from March 14 to prepare for a final performance on Sunday, March 20, which will be streamed live to the world on YouTube.

21 oktober 2010: March 14-20 2011 will mark the YouTube Symphony Orchestra’s return – and once again, we invite you to be a part of it. There are two ways you can audition: submit your video audition for the orchestra or submit a solo improvisation to a piece composed specifically for the orchestra by American composer Mason Bates.

The best and most creative performers will be selected to form the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011 and invited to perform in March at the Sydney Opera House, under the direction of world-renowned conductor and YouTube Symphony Artistic Advisor, Michael Tilson Thomas. Submissions close November 28, 2010.

In maart 2011 keert het YouTube Symfonie Orkest terug – en ook deze keer nodigen we jullie uit om mee te spelen. Je kunt op twee manieren auditie doen: je kunt een videoauditie voor het orkest indienen of een solo-improvisatie op een stuk dat speciaal voor dit orkest is gecomponeerd door de Amerikaanse componist Mason Bates. De beste en meest creatieve musici mogen in maart in het Sydney Opera House meespelen in het YouTube Symfonie Orkest 2011 onder leiding van de wereldberoemde dirigent Michael Tilson Thomas. 3 december 2008: Deelnemen aan het allereerste online-samenwerkende symfonie orkest? Wij nodigen professionele en amateur-musici van alle leeftijden uit om deel te nemen aan het YouTube Symfonie Orkest.Upload hiervoor je video-optreden van “de symfonie voor YouTube”, gecomponeerd door Tan Dun. Oefen de muziek samen met Tan Dun en upload je bijdrage voor de gemeenschappelijke video.

En wil je naar Carnegie Hall? Upload dan ook je talentvideo-uitvoering van een aanbevolen stuk. Finalisten zullen door een jurypanel en YouTube-gebruikers worden gekozen om deel te nemen aan het debuut van het YTSO in Carnegie Hall, New York, op 15 april 2009 (incl. reis en verblijf).

   Drie Nederlandse musici zijn uitverkoren om deel te nemen aan het allereerste YouTube Symfonie Orkest. Dat heeft de videowebsite dinsdag bekendgemaakt.

   De drie Nederlandse gelukkigen zijn violiste Annemarie van Viegen, celliste Rosette Kruisinga en harpiste Regina Ederveen. Op 15 april zal het YouTube-orkest, van in totaal negentig personen uit dertig verschillende landen, in Carnegie Hall in New York een concert geven. Het gezelschap zal dan met 26 verschillende instrumenten het speciaal gecomponeerde stuk ‘Internet Symphony Nr 1: Eroica’ ten gehore brengen.

   De winnaars werden gekozen uit tweehonderd finalisten door bezoekers van YouTube en muziekdirecteur Michael Tilson Thomas van het San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. De videowebsite kreeg sinds december 2008 meer dan drieduizend inzendingen binnen van professionele musici en amateurs.

   De afgelopen weken bekeken wereldwijd meer dan dertien miljoen mensen het speciale YouTube-kanaal voor het Symfonie Orkest dat op het internet in zestien talen te bekijken is. In de aanloop naar het optreden in Carnegie Hall krijgen de orkestleden masterclasses van grootheden uit de klassieke muziek.
