ISWA 2022 World Congress in Singapore by International Solid Waste Association

Update 17 January 2022: The next ISWA World Congress is being held in Athens, 21 – 23 September 2022 in Singapore.

The ISWA World Congress is a global meeting which includes high level plenaries as well as technical site visits and a cultural and social programme where waste management professionals, government officials, industry leaders, policy makers, scientists and young professionals meet to exchange views and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for sustainable solid waste management.

The ISWA World Congress will be making its physical comeback from the 21st to 23rd September 2022 in Singapore hosted by the Waste Management and Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS)!

Themed ‘don’t waste our future’ for this edition, it aims to showcase waste management more holistically and dynamically. Where young professionals can present their ideas to help businesses reinvent strategies to increase productivity and standards of the waste management industry. Whilst studying best practices from experts, businesses could explore renewing systems and processes with the final approach to regenerate materials by understanding an effective circular economy.

21 January 2021: The ISWA World Congress is the flagship event of the International Solid Waste Association where practitioners, policy makers, researchers,and academics from across the world gather to network, collaborate, learn,and inspire!

The next ISWA World Congress is being held in Athens, 4-7 October 2021, hosted by the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association (HSWMA).

The Congress with an overall theme of “From waste management to a circular economy –the road ahead” will include keynote and plenary sessions by invited speakers, and concurrent sessions with oral and poster presentations by the participants. Therefore, the ISWA World Congress2021 Programme Committee invites abstracts for oral and poster presentations.

27 Ocober 2020: The ISWA Video Award is an online short video competition. Whether documentary, fiction, animation or a combination thereof – the decision about the film genre as well as the technical realisation is left up to the contestant’s imagination. This years theme was “The Future of Waste” and we were not disappointed by the wonderful variation and creativity of this years entrants.

1st Place: “End Game” by John Adrian Aceron. John is a 21 year old Civil Engineering student from the Philippines who came across ISWA Video Awards while doing some research on sustainability and thought he would try his luck. When asked about his inspired him, he said “I think for me it’s about sending a message…because we are wasting everything … the world is beautiful and we’re not taking care of it and it’s just sad to think that the future generations may not see it.

2nd Place:“Daily Habits, Zero Waste” by Selene Eridani Zaragoza Alvarez. Selene is from Mexico City and is currently getting her Masters in Environmental Engineering at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. She was inspired by her both her master thesis work, where she developed an education programme for indigenous communities for adopting better sustainable waste management practices, as well as her own childhood. She has watched the areas where she happily played as a child, be transformed by waste pollution. In the video itself she demonstrates this with the drawing of a little girl imagining a planet with more sustainable waste management.

3rd Place: “What a Waste” Marie Julliene Solidum. Marie is also from the Philippines, she is 24 years old and just graduated as an electrical engineer. Marie found us on Twitter, and having a personal passion for the environment, created a beautiful stop motion film, “It was a long process… it is still so surreal to me to have won third place, I still can’t quite believe it!” She explained that she wanted to present the main problem facing hers and many other countries and that is trash piling up, and then give a solution.

24 September 2020: Every year ISWA recognises excellent Waste Communication Campaigns that increase public awareness and promote sustainable waste and resource management. We received some fantastic and incredibly creative submissions this year and are very proud to announce our winners. Congratulations!

1st Place: HSY Waste Escape Room by Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY. “We at HSY produce municipal water and waste management services to more than a million residents in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Together we will create the most sustainable urban region in the World.

The starting point of our campaign is to stand out and provide an adventure – in order to make waste sorting more attractive and to encourage residents to adopt new waste sorting skills. Based on a survey commissioned by HSY, young 18-30 -year-olds sort waste less than older age groups.

We aimed at creating a new and exciting way to learn about recycling. HSY’s strategic goal is to recycle 60 per cent of domestic waste in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area by 2025; this means that there is a need for getting the residents motivated through innovative ways.

As a part of our Thank you for sorting your waste campaign, we created an HSY concept of a Waste Escape Room which uses the classic elements of an escape room. In the Waste Escape Room concept, waste sorting skills are the key to success.

Waste Escape Room has been introduced at a total of 8 events, reached 10 000 residents, aroused huge interest and was broadcasted live on national TV in 2019. The marketing channels included social media, a YouTuber, and events.”

2nd Place: #PREVENTCOVID19 by EGF Portugal (ISWA Gold Member). Faced with the need to protect their workers and the population against the repercussions of the COVID-19’s pandemic, EGF launched a digital campaign, in the beginning of March 2020, to raise awareness and alert the population to stay at home with the aim of preventing and mitigating the spread of the coronavirus.

This campaign calls on the population to stay at home to avoid contagion and, in this way, to respect employees who deal with the management of our daily waste, both in terms of collection and treatment, in various infrastructures throughout Portugal.

It also seeks to clarify any questions related to packaging disposal, protective measures and equipment, health and environmental guidelines and regulations, and any concerns associated with the company procedures; to raise awareness to professions that are of the most importance but don’t have enough visibility in the media (such as waste collector and sorting operators); and to promulgate knowledge to citizens linked to waste, sustainability and the environment.

The whole project is composed by a digital campaign, online educational platform (with a FAQ list, Portuguese Health Directorate and Portuguese Environmental Agency guidelines, straight forward press releases, educational material available for download and tv and press features) and social media awareness posts on Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin.”

3rd Place: Trial Period by Zero Waste Scotland. “Trial Period was a first-of-its-kind behaviour change campaign for Zero Waste Scotland to encourage the uptake of reusable period products (menstrual cups, cloth pads and period pants) specifically targeting the 25 – 35 year old demographic. The campaign was initiated to tackle the 427million single use period products that are disposed of every year in Scotland, ending up in landfill or being incorrectly flushed down the toilet, thus being a significant cause of marine litter.

The campaign included our traditional communications mix of media relations and digital comms, but also took the Zero Waste Scotland brand onto the streets of Scotland with our first outdoor advertising billboards and public engagement events in Asda supermarket stores. A free online product trial in partnership with social enterprise Hey Girls resulted in 2346 products being snapped up in the first week of the campaign. The initial trial was so popular that it sold out within 48 hours and extra samples were secured. The campaign proposition “have a #TrialPeriod – it might just work for you, it certainly works for the planet” was built upon the insights and evidence from a robust Scotland wide consumer behaviour study on reusable menstrual products.”

The broad objectives of the campaign were: Raise awareness and remind those already aware of reusable menstrual products and their advantages; Encourage females to seek out information and take up a free trial; Encourage existing users to be “Padvocates” – sharing their switch stories using the campaign hashtag #TrialPeriod

7 May 2020: Due to Covid-19, it was no longer possible to organise an event which matched ISWA´s and the congress organiser’s ambitions, nor protect the health and safety of our visitors, suppliers and other parties.

The congress was scheduled from 28-30 September in Rotterdam and we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to both the NVRD as well as the City of Rotterdam for all their hard work and effort.

While many of our meetings and events have been postponed and/or cancelled, we are working hard to fulfill our mission in new ways online and we hope to meet you digitally very soon.

1 March 2018: By 2030, circular will be standard. Rotterdam will be a living laboratory in which we experiment, pioneer and embed successes. In which we profile the city and the port as a circular hotspot.

In 2020 Rotterdam will host the ISWA 2020 (International Solid Waste Association). The biggest congres to promote and develop sustainable and professional waste management worldwide.
