Update 5 Oktober 2021: The Pathways to Sustainability Conference Day 2021 will take place on 14 October. We offer you inspirational speakers reflecting on this year’s theme Making Change Happen from different perspectives.

Our conference week is devoted to the theme Making Change Happen and is filled with activities, each tailored to specific aims and audiences organized from different areas of expertise, in which there is room for deepening and knowledge exchange. In addition to our hubs, we also have a collaboration with the Eco Games Symposium and the Utrecht Science Week.

The final Conference Day on Thursday 14 October in TivoliVredenburg is meant to inspire and debate what action is needed to spur sustainable change. The issue is not to point at the magnitude of the problems of climate change or biodiversity loss, but to see who is in the position to cause the societal transformation needed or what may help get us on a trajectory towards a more sustainable future.

We hope to fulfill your expectations by giving the stage to inspiring keynote speakers like Mariana Mazzucato, Valérie Masson-Delmotte, Edgar Pieterse and performances by theatre maker Marjolijn van Heemstra and artist Aàdesokan.

12 December 2019: Every day we are confronted by alarming news of the climate crisis, vast biodiversity loss, faster than predicted thawing ice and permafrost, natural resource shortages, and rising social inequality.

We are increasingly aware that the pathways to sustainability require an extraordinary effort: where will the needed energy come from? How do we nurture the acceleration of promising trends?

How do we speed up to achieve societal, scientific and political breakthroughs while ensuring socially fair outcomes?

The third Pathways to Sustainability Conference is therefore devoted to the theme of ‘accelerating the sustainability transformation’.

In the morning programme, we’ll make a journey of how to achieve acceleration in the age of the Anthropocene and what this means for our work. In the afternoon there’s plenty of space for interaction in the parallel Breakthrough Sessions. We close the conference with the first Pathways to Sustainability Award.

Join the third Pathways to Sustainability Conference on Thursday 5 March 2020 at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht to enable change together at the pace and ambition necessary to meet our sustainability targets.

6 November 2019: Pathways to Sustainability is launching a special Award for transdisciplinary research projects that are combining the strengths of Utrecht University research with the agendas of external stakeholders for a sustainable future for all.

Are you involved in, or do you know of such project, then we invite you to nominate that project for the very first Pathways to Sustainability Award. The laureate project will be announced at the annual conference on Thursday 5 March 2020.

You can nominate a project. The submission deadline for nominations is Friday 17 January 2020. Research projects that can be nominated should include at least one scholar from Utrecht University. The project should be running at the moment of submission, or have been running in the year 2019. Furthermore, the winning project will meet the following criteria: Interdisciplinary in nature: the project engages researchers across multiple disciplines or has done so in 2019. Involving co-creation: the agenda and/or activities have been co-created with researchers and external stakeholder(s). Leading to societal impact: the project addresses a societal sustainability challenge resulting in a direct impact on society, or has done so in 2019.

A jury consisting of (international) board members of Pathways to Sustainability will select the three best projects. These three projects will be proudly profiled at the Pathways to Sustainability website and on other online channels. The final winning project will be chosen from the three shortlisted projects by public vote at the Pathways to Sustainability conference on Thursday 5 March 2020.

1 December 2018: At the annual conference of Pathways to Sustainability all sustainability related researchers and partners come together. The upcoming conference will take place on 24 January 2019 at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht. Check out the full programme of this year’s conference and register now.

The programme of the upcoming conference features keynotes from Sheila Jasanoff (Professor of Science and Technology Studies, Harvard University), Jeroen Willemsen (founder of the Green Protein Alliance), and Diederik Samsom (chair Klimaattafel Gebouwde Omgeving, nuclear physicist and former politician).

Harvard Professor Sheila Jasanoff challenges the two main visions to achieve a more sustainable world by introducing a new imaginary of the ‘un-modern’. Diederik Samsom uses storytelling to take us on a journey to sustainable futures, based on his varied experience with sustainable energy in the energy sector, Dutch politics, and at Greenpeace. And Jeroen Willemsen, founder of the plant-based ‘chicken’ producing company Ojah, argues that we need to restore the worldwide protein balance to ensure food security.

In the afternoon we offer several interactive break-out sessions, which are organised by the hubs of Pathways to Sustainability. They cover the energy transition, future food, future deltas and circular cities. In addition, we have a session on the circular economy in relation to the plastic soup, and one on the creation of a sustainable campus. We close off with an interactive discussion about the role of the university in the transition to a sustainable society.

In between these programme elements you can visit the Sustainable Marketplace, representing all kinds of initiatives within Utrecht University related to sustainability. And during the vegetarian lunch and other breaks there is plenty of opportunity to get in touch with fellow sustainability experts.

The programme of the Pathways to Sustainability conference 2019 consists of a plenary morning programme, a delicious vegetarian lunch, interactive break-out sessions, and a closing panel discussion. In between these programme elements, and at the end of the conference there is plenty of opportunity for networking and drinks at the Sustainable Marketplace.

19 Februari 2018: Prof Maarten Hajer, scientific director of the Pathways to Sustainability programme explains what he hopes to achieve in the next couple of years and how the Utrecht University hubs will help to turn these ambitions into reality.

Sustainability research at Utrecht University is exceptionally strong and covers many different fields. Having the unique combination of top-notch fundamental natural science research, modelling, and scholarship in innovation, transition, governance and finance, Utrecht University, as a broad research university, is at the forefront of innovation in sustainability research.

The focus will be on identifying and understanding transformative pathways in four hubs: Towards Industry with Negative Emissions - Future Food: Pathways towards Healthy Planet Diets - Transforming Infrastructures for Sustainable Cities - Water, Climate and Future Deltas.
