Ballon d'Or11 january 2011: Lionel Messi has been named the FIFA Ballon d’Or winner for 2010 ahead of FC Barcelona team-mates Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

The FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year trophy was for Marta, Brazil. Hamit Altintop recieved the FIFA Puskás Award 2010 for his fantastic goal in the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying match between Kazakhstan and Turkey played in Astana on 3 September 2010.

Jose Mourinho, Portugal FC Internazionale Milano/Real Madrid CF has been named FIFA World Coach of the Year and Silvia Neid coach of the German national teamhas been named FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s football.

One of South Africa’s struggle stalwarts who fought for the emancipation of South Africans during the era of apartheid, Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been honoured with the prestigious FIFA Presidential Award at the 2010 FIFA World Player of the Year Gala.

Tutu, a Nobel Prize winner, is mentioned in the same breath with some of South Africa’s most important leaders, and his contribution to the fight against apartheid brought him international acclaim. He continued to play a meaningful role in South Africa in the post-apartheid democratic country, and during South Africa’s bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Tutu was part of the South African delegation in Zurich. His picture with fellow Nobel Prize Laureate, Nelson Mandela holding the FIFA World Cup trophy became iconic, and Tutu went on to become one of the most passionate supporters of his country as they hosted a successful 2010 FIFA World Cup – the first one on the African continent.

27 December 2010: A new chapter in football was opened with the news that France Football’s Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year award have merged. As a result, the world’s best player will, from now on, be awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or each year.

In practical terms, the new FIFA Ballon d’Or award also represents a fusion in terms of voting procedure. Votes will now come from the coaches and captains of international teams – as was previously the case for the FIFA Player of the Year – and also from journalists, who used to nominate France Football’s Ballon d’Or winner.

The FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year trophy remains the same and will be awarded, as always, at the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala. However, voting for this award will also be different to past years. In similar fashion to the new style of voting for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, the Women’s World Player of the Year will be voted for by both the coaches and captains of international teams and football journalists.

The shortlist of three men and three women nominated for the FIFA Ballon d’Or are revealed. Men’s shortlist: Andres Iniesta, Spain, Lionel Messi, Argentina en Xavi, Spain. Women’s shortlist: Fatmire Bajramaj, Germany, Marta, Brazil and  Birgit Prinz, Germany.

FIFA is pleased to announce two new awards for this year: FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men’s and Women’s Football. Shortlist for FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men’s Football: Vicente Del Bosque, Spain national team, Pep Guardiola, Spain FC Barcelona and Jose Mourinho, Portugal FC Internazionale Milano/Real Madrid CF. Shortlist for FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s football: Maren Meinert,  Germany U-20 national team, Silvia Neid, Germany national team and Pia Sundhage, Sweden USA national team

Millions of football fans from all over the world voted for the FIFA Puskás Award 2010 from the shortlist  containing wondergoals from Hamit Altintop, Matthew Burrows, Linus Hallenius, Lionel Messi, Samir Nasri, Neymar, Arjen Robben, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Kumi Yokoyama.

The winner will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala on 10 January 2011, where he or she will receive the FIFA Puskás Award trophy, with their name engraved upon it. But in the meantime, you still can enjoy watching these magnificient goals on video. All winners will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala on 10 January 2011.
