The Ocean Array Platform: Ocean Trash Cleaner to Debut off Japanese Island Tsushima

Ocean Trash CleanerA self-sustaining system designed to rid the world’s oceans of millions of tonnes of floating plastic garbage is set to make its debut next year off the coast of Japan.

The Ocean Array Platform is designed to collect plastic trash that currently floats on or near the water’s surface. 

The one-mile wide array features two large booms on either side which use ocean currents to direct the plastic toward a central receptacle.

The trash is then filtered into a large trash receptor on the back of the floating platform for recycling.

With solar panels and water-generated turbines below the ocean surface, the platform is completely self sustaining.

The array will be installed near the Japanese island of Tsushima in 2016 as part of a two-year long trial.

Should the trial prove successful the project will be gradually expanded, with the ultimate aim to deploy a 62-mile-long array to capture around half of the trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge area of floating marine plastic and trash located between Hawaii and California.

The 19-year-old Dutch student Boyan Slat has developed a model for a self-sustaining Ocean Array Platform designed to rid the world of the more than 7.25 million tons of plastic trash that currently float on or near the surface of its oceans. The platform, which contains two large booms on either end, will use ocean currents to collect trash. The trash will then be filtered into a large trash receptor on the back of the platform. With solar paneling and water-generated turbines below the ocean surface, the platform will run completely on natural energy.     Ocean Cleanup Foundation in de schijnwerpers by CNN Eco Solutions

    In CNN’s Eco Solutions van deze maand onderzoeken de makers de teloorgang van onze oceanen door de aanwezigheid van grote hoeveelheden drijvend plastic. Zij gaan in gesprek met de mensen die zich inspannen om de oceanen weer schoon te maken. Eco Solutions interviewt de jonge Nederlandse uitvinder Boyan Slat, oprichter en CEO van de The Ocean Cleanup Foundation, en brengt een bezoek aan diens hoofdkantoor, om de nieuwste technologie en het nieuwst prototype te aanschouwen dat, nog sneller dan oorspronkelijk gedacht, kan zorgen voor het reinigen van de oceanen.

    In May 2018, a 120-meter section of the world’s first ocean cleanup system was towed out of San Francisco Bay into the Pacific to conduct a two-week tow test. The performance of the system during the test left the team feeling more confident about the design and has exemplified that it is ready for the challenge it is set to face in the Pacific.
