Vegetarian Meat made from Algae: An Environment Friendly Meat Substitute

TNO, a Dutch organization for applied scientific research, is going to investigate if it is possible to obtain proteins out of algae on a large scale.
These proteins could serve as environment-friendly meat substitute. It is announced that TNO will do this research in collaboration with Ingrepro Renewables BV.
At the moment many trees are being cut down in, among others, the South American Amazon. These trees are being used for the production of soya, which then serves as feed for stock for slaughter. The researchers are hoping that the proteins coming from the algae can be processed into vegetarian meat immediately.
The research will last for about two years and an amount of 1,5 milion Euro will be at their disposal. Largely provided by the Ministry of Agriculture. The researchers are also going to examine if there is more to get from the algae. Like for instance vegetable oils. Furthermore they will be investigating if the carbohydrates that are part of the algae can be used in any way. Source: Green Challenge Blog

Algae is renewable, does not affect the food channel and consumes CO2. To learn more about the fast-track commercialization of the algae production industry you may want to check out the National Algae Association.
