The Largest Windfarm in the World on Land: 10 GW Three Gorges in the Air Project in China

Kreeg een aantal tweets of ik het antwoord wist op de vraag: wat is de grootste windfarm? Bij de Club van 30 was men even het spoor kwijt en dat kan ik mij goed voorstellen.
De berichtgeving over projecten is niet altijd even waarheidsgetrouw en met name in de USA heeft men een ietwat beperkte horizon.
De wereld is een beetje klein en beperkt zich tot het Amerikaanse gezichtsveld.
Vooral websites als Inhabitat, Treehugger, Hufftington Post om er maar eens even een paar te noemen blinken uit in een opzienbarend taalgebruik. Bij de Club van 30 had men een bericht bij Inhabitat gelezen en dat bracht de nodige verwarring en de vraag aan mij of ik het juiste antwoord had. Hieronder mijn reactie.
Mooi hoor, typisch Inhabitat. Daar is alles Amazing, Stunning en vooral Largest or Biggest. Zo is die berichtgeveing nou eenmaal. Altijd gevaarlijk om zomaar over te nemen en meestal klopt het ook niet.
Nou deze windfarm is zeker niet de grootste, dat wist ik direct. Verder maakt het nog wat verschil tussen plan en al gerealiseerd. Plannen en goedkeuringen zijn er zo vaak, maar net zo vaak blijken die ambitieuze plannen niet door te gaan, zoals dit plan voor een windfarm van 4 GW. Pickens Plan is Dead
Amerikanen denken bovendien altijd dat zij de grootste plannen hebben, maar dat is al lang niet meer waar. Voor de echt grote plannen voor duurzame energie + de uitvoering is het verstandig om even naar wat andere delen van de wereld te kijken. De Arabische wereld en vooral Azië. Daar is men echt aan de slag met duurzame energie. Het grootste project wat mij bekend is en dat ook echt wordt uitgevoerd, is een windfarm op land van 10 GW. Overigens ben ook ik er niet zeker van dat deze 10 GW Windfarm ook echt de grootste windfarm in de wereld is.
Ander punt is uiteraard nog de grootste windfarm onshore of offshore, zoals dat zo mooi heet. Grote Offshore projecten zijn er ook al een heleboel. In Europa is Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Estate met tal van megaprojecten aan de slag. Gedeeltelijk gerealiseerd, gedeeltelijk in uitvoering en gedeeltelijk plan. Ook in Portugal is men goed bezig met een al gerealiseerde windfarm voor 1.000.000 huishoudens. Weet helaas niet hoeveel GW dat is (waarschijnlijk iets van 1,5 GW). En het meest ambitieuze plan van Europa niet te vergeten met maar liefst 2000 windturbines op zee.
Google heeft net aangekondigd met partners te zullen gaan voor 6 GW, uiteraard ook weer het grootste project ter wereld, maar ook dat is uiteraard niet waar. Bovendien is het grootste project nu, morgen alweer achterhaald door een nog groter project. Duitsland en Denemarken hebben heel veel windenergie gerealiseerd, maar op een iets ander manier georganiseerd, zeg maar volgens de theorie van Appie Heijn: heel veel kleintjes maken…..
Wellicht ga ik alles nog eens in een mooi overzicht zetten, maar op voorhand ken ik de uitkomst al wel: grootste waterkracht projecten: China. Grootste solar-farms: China en India en als Desertec echt doorgaat Afrika uiteraard. Grootste windfarms onshore: China. Bij de grootste windfarms offshore is de strijd nog open. UK’s Crown Estate en op termijn de USA zijn mooie kanshebbers, maar ook in Brazilië heeft men grootse plannen. Grootste Ocean Power projecten (Tidel, Wave, etc) vooralsnog in the UK (Crown Estate). The Three Gorges Dam: Duurzame Energie van de Drieklovendam
Goede outsider in de strijd om de grootste is natuurlijk de Arabische wereld. Daar kan alles in een enkel briljant moment van deze of gene Sjeik veranderen. Geld genoeg, ambitie ook en men heeft geen last van bezwaarprocedures of mensen die tegen zijn. Als een Sjeik iets in zijn hoofd heeft, gebeurd het gewoon.

China’s future wind power could equal 13 Three Gorges Dams: 230 GW in 2020
China’s wind power can reach 230 GW of installed capacity by 2020, and its annual electricity output of 464.9 TWh could replace 200 coal fire power plants, according to China Wind Power Outlook 2010, a new report jointly released by Greenpeace, the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
In 2009, China led the world in newly installed wind-energy devices, reaching a capacity of 13.8 GW (10,129 turbines) – a rate of one new turbine every hour. In terms of overall capacity, China ranks second, at 25.8 GW.
“The rapid wind power growth in China was propelled by both the growing need for energy and the government’s eagerness to develop low-carbon technology,” said Li Junfeng, secretary general of CREIA. “China’s speed of wind power development is remarkable,” commented Steve Sawyer, secretary general of GWEC. “In 2005, only one Chinese company was among the top 15 manufacturers in the world. Today, there are five.”
The report projects that by 2020, China’s total wind power capacity will reach at least 150GW, possibly up to 230GW, which, if realised, could cut 410 million tons of CO2 emission, or 150 million tons of coal consumption. “This positive projection of 230 GW of wind energy equals 13 times the capacity of the Three Gorges Dam, with the ability to replace power generated from 200 coal fire power plants. However, it is only achievable with the implementation of effective incentive policies and a thorough overhaul of the national grid,” said Yang Ailun, head of the Climate and Energy Team of Greenpeace. China’s First 1 GW Offshore Windfarm: One of Largest in the World
The first phase of state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation’s (CNOOC) (Beijing, China) offshore windfarm in Bohai Bay is under construction. When completed in 2020, it will be one of the world’s largest windfarms and will generate about 1,000 megawatts. CNOOC unveiled plans for the project in 2007, taking advantage of China’s Renewable Energy Law in a bid to conserve energy and develop renewable energy technology. CNOOC has also pledged about $2.2 billion to develop a renewable energy industry base in Tianjin, which is in northeast China. The base will be devoted to renewable projects and a research and development center.
In 2005, China passed the Renewable Energy Law, which serves as protection for producers and encourages the development of renewable energy facilities, providing outlets for companies involved in other areas of industry, such as oil and gas, to invest in sustainable forms of energy. Incentives for investing include feed-in tariffs that cover the additional costs of purchasing renewable energy, which is slightly more expensive than fossil fuel-derived electricity. Last December, China approved amendments that are set to streamline the incentives and encourage more involvement in renewable energy.
China has vast potential for wind power. By the end of 2009, China had an installed wind-generated power capacity of about 20 gigawatts (GW), and the country hopes to reach 30 GW by 2020. The potential for onshore windfarms is estimated to be as high as 250 GW, while offshore wind development is believed to be able to produce three times that. About 15 companies that specialize in building wind turbines, as well as several well-known foreign manufacturers, are looking to develop domestic windfarms in China. Source: Ordons News

Forewind Doggerbank: Start of the World’s Largest 9-13 GW Offshore Wind Project
The development consortium Forewind, which also includes RWE Innogy, has announced the first stage in building the biggest offshore wind farm project in the world. Dogger Bank is a sandbank approx. 120 miles (200 km) off the east coast of England. Covering an area of about ten times the size of Berlin, some 9,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind power are to be installed here by 2020 and can eventually be expanded to 13,000 MW. Read more

China’s largest offshore Jiangsu Qidong wind farm is now fully connected to the grid
China’s largest offshore wind farm was connected to the grid at full capacity on Saturday, December 25. It transmitted power through undersea cables.
The 802 megawatt (MW) Jiangsu Qidong offshore wind farm is off the eastern province of Jiangsu. The wind farm consists of three projects – H1, H2, and H3 – and each has an offshore booster station.
It covers an area of 44.2 square miles (114.5 square kilometers) and consists of 134 wind turbines. Interestingly, it consists of a mixturehodgepodge of turbines, including seven models from four Chinese manufacturers.
Jiangsu Qidong will supply around 2.2 billion kilowatts per hour of electricity to the grid annually, which is capable of powering around 900,000 households.
