Dunkerque 2010: 6th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns

Zo, het is weer tijd voor de drie-jaarlijkse evaluatie van het Europese programma om onze steden wat duurzamer te maken.
Elke drie jaar komen honderden steden en gemeenten samen om ervaringen uit te wisselen én inzicht te geven in de stand van zaken in hun stad.
Van 19 tot en met 21 mei 2010 staat de zesde European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns op het programma in Duinkerken. Voorafgaand aan deze bijeenkomst is er nog het Informed Cities Forum van 14 tot en met 16 april 2010 in Newcastle. Dit programma heeft de mooie ondertitel: Making Research Work for Local Sustainability.
Maar het kan niet op want op 13 en 14 april is er ook nog de eerste Informed Cities European Roundtable. Een tweede Rondtable staat op de planning voor december 2010 en ook de derde Roundtable kunt u vast bijschrijven in de agenda. Dat wordt een bijzondere want de derde Roundtable valt samen met het tweede Informed Cities Forum september 2011.
Geweldig aantal vergaderingen en bijeenkomsten, dus dan verwacht je ook wat. Helaas kan ik eigenlijk helemaal niets terugvinden van wat men nu eigenlijk concreet doet aan duurzaamheid in die 2500 gemeenten uit meer dan 40 Europese landen.
Wat wel meer mooi is dat men nog even de nadruk legt op Greening of the event. Nog mooier is natuurlijk dat die vergroening betrekkelijk makkelijk wordt gerealiseerd. Kwestie van compenseren en klaar is the Case.
For the 6th ESCT Conference – Dunkerque 2010, a climate legacy initiative will be adopted. The initiative aims to reduce the environmental impacts of events. As part of the initiative, a carbon offset payment is included in the conference fee to compensate for CO2 emissions caused by conference related travel. This offset payment is calculated according to participants’ average distance travelled by region. The funding generated through the initiative will serve to finance CO2 reduction projects.

The European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign is working since 1994 to mainstream sustainable actions throughout Europe and gain wider political significance to support sustainable policies. It helps local governments across Europe to replicate the best local practices and to implement the Aalborg Charter and the Aalborg Commitments to achieve tangible results in local sustainable development.
The Campaign is built around a partnership between eight local government networks and the Campaign founders, combining the expertise and the tools for the creation of sustainability policies and providing the means to reach out to local governments across Europe. More than 2500 local governments from more than 40 European countries have signed the Aalborg Charter, the founding document of the Campaign, and more than 600 European local Governments have signed the Aalborg Commitments.
