In Disclosing Secret Documents, WikiLeaks Seeks ‘Transparency’ by New York Times
WikiLeaks, the online organization that posted tens of thousands of classified military field reports about the Afghan war on Sunday, says its goal in disclosing secret documents is to reveal “unethical behavior” by governments and corporations. Read more at New York Times
Afghanistan war logs: Massive leak of secret files exposes truth of occupation by The Guardian
A huge cache of secret US military files today provides a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, Taliban attacks have soared and Nato commanders fear neighbouring Pakistan and Iran are fuelling the insurgency.
The disclosures come from more than 90,000 records of incidents and intelligence reports about the conflict obtained by the whistleblowers’ website Wikileaks in one of the biggest leaks in US military history. Read more at The Guardian

Cablegate: WikiLeaks Releases Diplomatic Cables
WikiLeaks was forced Friday December 3th to switch over to a new Swiss domain name, after a new round of hacker attacks on its system prompted its American domain name provider to withdraw service. WikiLeaks’ U.S. domain name system provider, EveryDNS, withdrew service to the wikileaks.org name late Thursday, saying it took the action because the new hacker attacks threatened the rest of its network.
The whistleblower website WikiLeaks has released scores of electronic cables sent between headquarters in Washington and embassies and consulates around the world. The leaked documents include confidential views about major allies and partners, including worries about security at a Pakistan nuclear facility and concerns about alleged links between the Russian government and the mafia. Heads start rolling in WikiLeaks affair
The WikiLeaks affair has claimed its first victim after Germany’s vice-chancellor Guido Westerwelle on Thursday (3 December) sacked his chief of staff for spying for the Americans. Italy’s Prime Minister has also been put in a pickle ahead of a confidence vote in parliament, and reports indicate that WikiLeaks mastermind Julian Assange is himself to be arrested shortly by UK police.
Mr Westerwelle’s chief of staff, Helmut Metzner, admitted that he gave regular information to the US embassy in Berlin, and has been “relieved from his duties,” a spokesman for the Liberal Free Democrats (FDP) said in a statement.

Joop start Actie Asiel voor WikiLeaks Julian Assange in Nederland
PETITIE

EU officials give first analysis of WikiLeaks impact
More investment in European External Action Service (EEAS) security, loss of goodwill in the EU’s special relationship with the US and heightened tension in the Middle East are all likely consequences of the WikiLeaks scandal, EU insiders say.
WikiLeaks is a no-go area in on-the-record press briefings in Brussels, with EU spokespeople saying they do not comment on leaks or trying to brush them off as a distraction to real business. But senior EU officials interviewed on an anonymous basis by EUobserver in the wake of the publications say it will have practical and political implications for EU foreign-policy-making.
EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton is set to face pressure to spend more money on cyber security and counter-espionage measures in the EEAS’ hub and its foreign delegations. The scandal comes just as a special Ashton taskforce is finalising plans for the physical security of the EEAS headquarters in Brussels and installing new encryption systems for sending cables back-and-forth to its 136 foreign embassies.
European Commission delegations in the past mostly cabled on mundane issues, such as distributing aid. But EEAS appointments of senior politicians to head missions in, for example, Tbilisi and Beijing, indicate the cables will be more spicy in future. Security specialists in Brussels are “shocked” and “astonished” that a 23-year-old official, the suspected source of the US breach, had access to verbatim transcripts of ambassadors’ conversations in top foreign postings. WikiLeaks cablegate reveal how US manipulated the Copenhagen Climate Accord
The US diplomatic cables reveal how the US seeks dirt on nations opposed to its approach to tackling global warming; how financial and other aid is used by countries to gain political backing; how distrust, broken promises and creative accounting dog negotiations; and how the US mounted a secret global diplomatic offensive to overwhelm opposition to the controversial “Copenhagen accord”, the unofficial document that emerged from the ruins of the Copenhagen climate change summit in 2009.
The accord turns the UN’s top-down, unanimous approach upside down, with each nation choosing palatable targets for greenhouse gas cuts. It presents a far easier way to bind in China and other rapidly growing countries than the UN process. But the accord cannot guarantee the global greenhouse gas cuts needed to avoid dangerous warming. Furthermore, it threatens to circumvent the UN’s negotiations on extending the Kyoto protocol, in which rich nations have binding obligations. Those objections have led many countries – particularly the poorest and most vulnerable – to vehemently oppose the accord.
Getting as many countries as possible to associate themselves with the accord strongly served US interests, by boosting the likelihood it would be officially adopted. A diplomatic offensive was launched. Diplomatic cables flew thick and fast between the end of Copenhagen in December 2009 and late February 2010, when the leaked cables end. Read more at the Guardian

I am an american citizen and I am proud someone in a position to actually make a difference in the way the US government is perceived, especially by it’s citizens is doing something to shed a little light on what our government is up to. For way to long and even now a lot of the people in our country are of the opinion that our country can do no evil–yet our country seems to be in the lead when it comes to doing just that. WikiLeaks shows why China raised heat on Google
As China ratcheted up the pressure on Google to censor its Internet searches last year, the U.S. Embassy sent a secret cable to Washington detailing one reason top Chinese leaders had become so obsessed with the Internet search company: They were googling themselves.
The May 18, 2009, cable, titled “Google China Paying Price for Resisting Censorship,” quoted a well-placed source as saying that Li Changchun, a member of China’s top ruling body, the Politburo Standing Committee, and the country’s senior propaganda official, was taken aback to discover that he could conduct Chinese-language searches on Google’s main international website. When Li typed his name into the search engine at google.com, he found “results critical of him.”
That cable from U.S. diplomats was one of many made public by WikiLeaks that portray China’s leadership as nearly obsessed with the threat posed by the Internet to their grip on power – and, the reverse, by the opportunities it offered them, through hacking, to obtain secrets stored in computers of its rivals, especially the United States. WikiLeaks: Open Letter to Amazon.com by Daniel Ellsberg
I’m disgusted by Amazon’s cowardice and servility in abruptly terminating its hosting of the Wikileaks website, in the face of threats from Senator Joe Lieberman and other Congressional right-wingers. I want no further association with any company that encourages legislative and executive officials to aspire to China’s control of information and deterrence of whistle-blowing.
For the last several years, I’ve been spending over $100 a month on new and used books from Amazon. That’s over. I have contacted Customer Service to ask Amazon to terminate immediately my membership in Amazon Prime and my Amazon credit card and account, to delete my contact and credit information from their files and to send me no more notices.
I understand that many other regular customers feel as I do and are responding the same way. Good: the broader and more immediate the boycott, the better.I hope that these others encourage their contact lists to do likewise and to let Amazon know exactly why they’re shifting their business. I’ve asked friends today to suggest alternatives. I’ve removed all links to Amazon from my site, and I’ll be exploring service from Powell’s Books, IndieBound, Biblio and others.
So far Amazon has spared itself the further embarrassment of trying to explain its action openly. This would be a good time for Amazon insiders who know and perhaps can document the political pressures that were brought to bear—and the details of the hasty kowtowing by their bosses—to leak that information. They can send it to Wikileaks (now on servers outside the US), to mainstream journalists or bloggers, or perhaps to a site like antiwar.com, which has now appropriately ended its book-purchasing association with Amazon and called a boycott. Hunt for WikiLeaks founder ‘politically motivated’
The pursuit of WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange appears to have “political motivations”, his lawyer told BBC television on Sunday. “I’m really rather worried by the political motivations that appear to be behind this,” Mark Stephens said during an interview. His comments came after Swedish prosecutors issued an international arrest warrant for Assange — the elusive boss of whistleblowing website WikiLeaks — on sex assault allegations.
Assange broke cover on Friday to say in an online chat that he had boosted security after receiving death threats amid the storm that was unleashed by his site’s decision to publish 250,000 US diplomatic cables. Over the past several days, WikiLeaks has published the first of the cables, creating an international firestorm as American diplomats’ private assessments of foreign leaders and politics has been publicly aired. International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Condemns United States “Desperate and Dangerous” Backlash over WikiLeaks
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today condemned the political backlash being mounted against the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks and accused the United States of attacking free speech after it put pressure on the website’s host server to shut down the site yesterday.
The website’s host Amazon.com blocked access to WikiLeaks after United States officials condemned the torrent of revelations about political, business and diplomatic affairs that has given people around the world unprecedented access to detailed information from United States sources, much of it embarrassing to leading public figures.
“It is unacceptable to try to deny people the right to know,” said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary. “These revelations may be embarrassing in their detail, but they also expose corruption and double-dealing in public life that is worthy of public scrutiny. The response of the United States is desperate and dangerous because it goes against fundamental principles of free speech and democracy.”
The IFJ has taken no position on the justification for the release of hundreds of thousands of internal documents which have made headlines around the world in the last few days, but it has welcomed the decision of WikiLeaks to use respected channels of journalism including Der Spiegel, The Guardian, the New York Times, Le Monde and El Pais to filter the information. WikiLeaks press release: Julian Assange Defense Fund Frozen by Swiss Bank Post Finance
The Swiss Bank Post Finance today issues a press release stating that it had frozen Julian Assange’s defense fund and personal assets (31K EUR) after reviewing him as a “high profile” individual.
The technicality used to seize the defense fund was that Mr. Assange, as a homeless refugee attempting to gain residency in Switzerland, had used his lawyers address in Geneva for the bank’s correspondence. Late last week, the internet payment giant PayPal, froze 60K EUR of donations to the German charity the Wau Holland Foundation, which were targeted to promote the sharing of knowledge via WikiLeaks.
WikiLeaks and Julian have lost 100Keur in assets this week. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Cablegate exposure is how it is throwing into relief the power dynamics between supposedly independent states like Switzerland, Sweden and Australia.
WikiLeaks also has public bank accounts in Iceland (preferred) and Germany. Please help to cover expenditures while WikiLeaks fight to get their assets back.

Cablegate: EU and US try to outwit poor countries on climate
Alarmed by increasing co-ordination among emerging nations on the climate dossier, the EU and US agreed earlier this year to synchronise their own efforts, with talks focusing on use of aid to win over reluctant third countries, leaked US diplomatic cables have revealed.
Released by whistleblower site WikiLeaks over the weekend, one cable describes a meeting between Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Change Jonathan Pershing and EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard on 11 February, during which Ms Hedegaard reportedly called for greater co-operation to counter the so-called Basic countries (Brazil, South Africa, India and China). Ms Hedegaard asked the US whether it would require any creative accounting to produce the necessary climate finance. The two sides discussed the recently-agreed Copenhagen Accord, with the US official describing plans to get as many nations to sign up to the agreement as possible. He also said that promises by some major economies under the deal were “opaque.”
According to the cable, Ms Hedegaard said China’s submission was open to interpretation, adding that she did not have high expectations for COP 16 meeting in Mexico, currently now underway. As a result, it would be important to downplay expectations, she added. As the two discussed strategies to win over support for the accord, Ms Hedegaard suggested the Alliance of Small Island States (Aosis) countries “could be our best allies” given their need for financing.
The sensitive issue of ‘fast-start’ funding was also approached – $30 billion pledged by rich nations to help their poorer counterparts tackle the immediate effects of climate change. Ms Hedegaard reportedly asked whether the US would need to do any “creative accounting” to produce its slice of the promised money.
The issue of creative accounting raised considerable controversy last week when the EU outlined details of its own contribution, €7.2 billion between 2010 and 2012, in Cancun, with some questioning how much new money is contained in rich country pledges. Development NGOs and poorer nations also turned on the EU when it emerged that loans rather than grants would make up roughly half of the union’s contribution.
The cables suggest that earlier this year the EU had been largely considering grants. “$30 billion had been promised, it cannot be lent,” Ms Hedegaard reportedly told the US official. A separate cable describes wide-ranging discussions between deputy national security advisor for international economic affairs Michael Froman and over 25 senior EU officials, including Ms Hedegaard, in Brussels on 27 January.
The issue of tackling the Basic countries was again discussed during the earlier meeting, with Ms Hedegaard also outlining how Copenhagen left some disappointed by the UN process, but stressing it should not be ditched. The Copenhagen Accord contained a lot of good points, she reportedly said, adding that it should not be wasted. She hoped that the US noted the EU was muting its criticism of the US, to be constructive, says the cable. Source: EU Observer

Update: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange arrested in London
The founder of the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been arrested by the Metropolitan Police. The 39-year-old Australian denies allegations he sexually assaulted two women in Sweden.
Scotland Yard said Mr Assange was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant by appointment at a London police station at 0930 GMT. He is due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court later.
WikiLeaks Cablegate: Video Julian Assange to talk to British police
British Court Denies Bail to Assange
The exchange appeared to have weighed against his bid for bail, which his lawyers had initially seemed confident of securing. The bid was supported by financial guarantees of more than $150,000 from a cast of well-known supporters who appeared in court, including the filmmaker Ken Loach and Jemima Khan, a socialite and political activist.
There was audible dismay as the judge, Howard Riddle, agreed with Ms. Lindfield that there were “significant grounds” for thinking Mr. Assange posed a flight risk, because of his “nomadic lifestyle,” his lack of ties in Britain, his network of international contacts and his access to substantial sums donated by WikiLeaks supporters. If WikiLeaks founder turns himself in, will cablegate end? Julian Assange, the founder of WikilLeaks, is planning to turn himself into police to face questioning over allegations of rape and other crimes in Sweden. The question is whether that will end the cyber leak war that has been happening for weeks.
The case is a test of just how far internet freedoms can go, since WikiLeaks has come under fire from governments around the world for making classified documents public on the internet. It’s unclear whether such leaks would continue if Assange is arrested and prosecuted, although Assange has said himself that if anything happens to him, further sensitive documents would automatically go live.
Newspapers have reported that Assange is expected to hand himself into police as early as Tuesday, after the Swedish authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant. Assange has been hiding in the southeast of England. The development follows news that Swiss authorities have closed down one of Assange’s bank accounts. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has agreed to meet with British police over an arrest warrant and extradition request from Sweden, according to reports from the British press.
“Late this afternoon after close of business I got a call from the police who said that they had received an extradition request from Sweden,” said Mark Stephens, an attorney for Assange, in an interview with the BBC. “Their request is to interview Julian Assange. He’s not been charged with anything. We are in the process of making arrangements to meet with the police by consent, in order to facilitate the taking of that question and answer that is needed.” See also: WikiLeaks’ Assange To Meet With U.K. Police Over Swedish Warrant

WikiLeaks is not perfect, and we have highlighted many of its shortcomings on this web site. Nevertheless, it’s time to make a clear statement about the value of the site and take sides: WikiLeaks stands to improve our democracy, not weaken it.
The greatest threat we face right now from Wikileaks is not the information it has spilled and may spill in the future, but the reactionary response to it that’s building in the United States that promises to repudiate the rule of law and our free speech traditions, if left unchecked.

Julian Assange, WikiLeaks founder, in jail: World Press Freedom Day in the US announced by State Department

The United States places technology and innovation at the forefront of its diplomatic and development efforts. New media has empowered citizens around the world to report on their circumstances, express opinions on world events, and exchange information in environments sometimes hostile to such exercises of individuals’ right to freedom of expression. TIME: Why WikiLeaks Is Winning Its Info War
There was a time when WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s voluntary surrender to the British authorities might have put an end to the crisis created by the Internet provocateur’s dissemination of tens of thousands of state secrets. But in the upside-down world of transnational crowdsourcing unleashed by WikiLeaks, in which thousands of activists around the globe can be rallied to defend and extend its work, Assange’s arrest is a win, not a loss, for his organization.
The asymmetrical info war initiated by the WikiLeaks dump of diplomatic cables is all about spectacle — the more Assange is set up by world powers, the more powerful his own movement becomes. “The field of battle is WikiLeaks,” wrote John Perry Barlow, a former Grateful Dead lyricist and founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the First Amendment advocacy group, in a message to his followers. “You are the troops.” WikiLeaks admiringly forwarded the post to 300,000 of its own followers. As the U.S. and other governments attempted to close down WikiLeaks over the past week, those “troops” have fought back. And so far, it doesn’t look like much of a contest. Read more at TIME

Julian Assange jailed as Visa cuts all payments to WikiLeaks
British judge has denied ball for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who told a London court he intends to fight his extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations. Judge Howard Riddle told Assange that he had “substantial grounds” to believe the 39-year-old Australian wouldn’t turn up for subsequent proceedings. He then put Assange into U.K. custody ahead of an extradition hearing. Mark Stephens, Assange’s British lawyer, has given a brief press conference after the hearing.
Meanwhile, Visa has suspended all payments to WikiLeaks. The payment processor’s move leaves the website without its main source of revenue, as the whistleblower largely depends on online donations. Popular online payment company http://bit.ly/fGXLL5 ” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>PayPal has already stopped its operations with WikiLeaks. Swiss authorities announced Monday that they closed the new Swiss bank account of the website’s founder Julian Assange, who was arrested Tuesday in London on charges of sexual assault.

Australian media figures in support of WikiLeaks
The Walkley Foundation has initiated a letter to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, signed by members of the board, editors of major Australian newspapers and news sites, and news directors of the country’s commercial and public broadcasters.
The volume of the leaks is unprecedented, yet the leaking and publication of diplomatic correspondence is not new. We, as editors and news directors of major media organisations, believe the reaction of the US and Australian governments to date has been deeply troubling. We will strongly resist any attempts to make the publication of these or similar documents illegal. Any such action would impact not only on WikiLeaks, but every media organisation in the world that aims to inform the public about decisions made on their behalf. WikiLeaks, just four years old, is part of the media and deserves our support.
Already, the chairman of the US Senate homeland security committee, Joe Lieberman, is suggesting The New York Times should face investigation for publishing some of the documents. The newspaper told its readers that it had ‘‘taken care to exclude, in its articles and in supplementary material, in print and online, information that would endanger confidential informants or compromise national security.’’ Such an approach is responsible — we do not support the publication of material that threatens national security or anything which would put individual lives in danger. Those judgements are never easy, but there has been no evidence to date that the WikiLeaks material has done either.
There is no evidence, either, that Julian Assange and WikiLeaks have broken any Australian law. The Australian government is investigating whether Mr Assange has committed an offence, and the Prime Minister has condemned WikiLeaks’ actions as ‘‘illegal’’. So far, it has been able to point to no Australian law that has been breached.
To prosecute a media organisation for publishing a leak would be unprecedented in the US, breaching the First Amendment protecting a free press. In Australia, it would seriously curtail Australian media organisations reporting on subjects the government decides are against its interests.
WikiLeaks has no doubt made errors. But many of its revelations have been significant. It has given citizens an insight into US thinking about some of the most complex foreign policy issues of our age, including North Korea, Iran and China.
It is the media’s duty to responsibly report such material if it comes into their possession. To aggressively attempt to shut WikiLeaks down, to threaten to prosecute those who publish official leaks, and to pressure companies to cease doing commercial business with WikiLeaks, is a serious threat to democracy, which relies on a free and fearless press. Human Rights Watch letter to President Barack Obama
Human Rights Watch has published a letter to President Barack Obama, urging the US administration not to prosecute WikiLeaks and Julian Assange in conjunction with the publication of the Cablegate documents.
Dear President Obama:
We write to express our concern at the prospect that the US government would employ espionage laws against WikiLeaks or its founder for the release of US State Department cables. Regardless of how one views the intentions, wisdom or strict legality of the WikiLeaks release, we believe that resorting to prosecution will degrade freedom of expression for all media, researchers and reporters, and set a terrible precedent that will be eagerly grasped by other governments, particularly those with a record of trying to muzzle legitimate political reporting.

The inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning’s detention
Bradley Manning, the 22-year-old U.S. Army Private accused of leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks, has never been convicted of that crime, nor of any other crime. Despite that, he has been detained at the U.S. Marine brig in Quantico, Virginia for five months — and for two months before that in a military jail in Kuwait — under conditions that constitute cruel and inhumane treatment and, by the standards of many nations, even torture. Interviews with several people directly familiar with the conditions of Manning’s detention, ultimately including a Quantico brig official (Lt. Brian Villiard) who confirmed much of what they conveyed, establishes that the accused leaker is subjected to detention conditions likely to create long-term psychological injuries.
Since his arrest in May, Manning has been a model detainee, without any episodes of violence or disciplinary problems. He nonetheless was declared from the start to be a “Maximum Custody Detainee,” the highest and most repressive level of military detention, which then became the basis for the series of inhumane measures imposed on him.
From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement. For 23 out of 24 hours every day — for seven straight months and counting — he sits completely alone in his cell. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he’s barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions. For reasons that appear completely punitive, he’s being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch). For the one hour per day when he is freed from this isolation, he is barred from accessing any news or current events programs. Lt. Villiard protested that the conditions are not “like jail movies where someone gets thrown into the hole,” but confirmed that he is in solitary confinement, entirely alone in his cell except for the one hour per day he is taken out.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange granted bail
A London judge rules that Julian Assange can remain free while fighting extradition to Sweden. Conditions of bail are expected to be stringent. Assange is wanted for questioning in connection with molestation and rape allegations, which he says are politically motivated. Justice Duncan Ouseley agreed with a decision by City of Westminister magistrates court earlier in the week to release Assange on strict conditions: £200,000 cash deposit, with a further £40,000 guaranteed in two sureties of £20,000, and strict conditions on his movement.

EU digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes: WikiLeaks will increase government transparency
The WikiLeaks disclosure of US diplomatic cables highlights the need to secure networks and individuals from hackers, EU digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes has said. At the same time, the phenomenon stresses the need for governments to be “as transparent and open as possible,” which entails the “practical advantage” of reducing the amount of information that needs to be secured, she declared.
Speaking out almost three weeks after the whistleblower started publishing the leaked US cables, Ms Kroes on Thursday (16 December) during a joint US-EU cybersecurity event in Washington drew the first lessons for the EU from the Wikileaks phenomenon.
The 69-year old Dutch politician distinguished between three security incidents regarding WikiLeaks: first, the leak itself, believed to be acquired by a 22-year old US army soldier who copied all the documents onto a CD which he allegedly brought into his office to listen to pop singer Lady Gaga.
“From a cyber-security angle, this highlights the need for all organisations and individuals to protect themselves against threats to steal confidential information,” Ms Kroes said. But she also stressed the need for governments to be “as transparent and open as possible.” “I think that is an important value, but it also has a major practical advantage: it reduces the amount of information that requires special protection,” the Dutch Liberal said. The Bank of America has joined MasterCard, PayPal, Visa and Swiss bank PostFinance in refusing to process transactions “of any type” that it believes is intended for Wikileaks. No word on what will form the basis for that belief. “This decision is based upon our reasonable belief that WikiLeaks may be engaged in activities that are, among other things, inconsistent with our internal policies for processing payments.”
In a recent interview with Forbes magazine, Julian Assange stated that he planned to release information on a major bank early next year. It has been widely speculated in the US media that the bank in question is the Bank of America.

Apple on Tuesday confirmed that it had removed from its online store an iPhone and iPad app that let users view the content on the WikiLeaks site and follow the WikiLeaks Twitter account.

The $1.99 WikiLeaks App was taken down on Monday after being available for just three days. It is not clear how popular it was. Its developer promised to donate $1 for every download to organizations that “promote the future of online democracy. ” It had received only three reviews, according to the Huffington Post. Two of those reviews were negative.

Julian Assange named The Nation’s Person of the Year
After a recent readers’ poll which didn’t determine but helped define the choices, Time magazine named Mark Zuckerberg its Person of the Year for 2010 for “changing how we all live our lives.” (Time readers, not the most radical bunch, picked Julian Assange as the winner and had Zuckerberg ranked 10th.) Time’s runner-ups included Assange, Hamid Karzai and Sarah Palin.
Since we here at The Nation consider our readership the most politically informed and intelligent of any publication in the country, we thought it would be informative to conduct a Nation readers’ poll to determine the Person of the Year for our own community.
The response was strong and, interestingly, WilkiLeaks founder Assange was also our clear-cut winner because, as Lorna Singh pointed out, “we need to see how we were lied to,” and, as Mike Pribula wrote, “he has reminded us about the importance of integrity in diplomacy and democratic ideals in our republic.” Source: The Nation

WikiLeaks: U.S. Diplomats Acted As Salespeople For Boeing Over Airbus
The king of Saudi Arabia wanted the United States to outfit his personal jet with the same high-tech devices as Air Force One. The president of Turkey wanted the Obama administration to let a Turkish astronaut sit in on a NASA space flight. And in Bangladesh, the prime minister pressed the State Department to re-establish landing rights at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Each of these government leaders had one thing in common: they were trying to decide whether to buy billions of dollars’ worth of commercial jets from Boeing or its European competitor, Airbus. And United States diplomats were acting like marketing agents, offering deals to heads of state and airline executives whose decisions could be influenced by price, performance and, as with all finicky customers with plenty to spend, perks. Of the 44 journalists killed in 2010 for whose deaths a key advocacy group was able to find a motive, almost a third of them covered corruption.
The Committee to Protect Journalists, or CPJ, which defends media workers around the world, tracks and investigates the circumstances surrounding the deaths of journalists, and it created an interactive infographic showing where, how and why most were killed last year. Thirteen of the 44, or 30%, were corruption beat reporters. Other top beats of journalists killed included politics, war, culture and crime. Some of the beats overlapped, however, causing the aggregated percentages to go far over 100%. Source: Wall Street Journal

The hearing, which is mostly procedural, will probably decide the date of the extradition hearing, as well as what documents and witnesses will be used in the proceedings.

New Dutch EU ambassador in trouble after WikiLeaks Cablegate Disclosure of Messages
Top Dutch civil servant Pieter de Gooijer has come under fire after Wikileaks’ disclosure of messages from the United States embassy in The Hague. Dutch newspaper says Labour MP Frans Timmermans is objecting to Mr De Gooijer becoming the Dutch ambassador to the European Union.
The civil servant was a senior foreign ministry official in 2009 and, according to the Wikileaks documents, asked the US embassy to put pressure on the then Labour leader and deputy prime minister, Wouter Bos. He hoped Mr Bos would be pushed into agreeing to an extension of the Dutch military mission in Afghanistan.
Last Friday, Mr De Gooijer was named as the top representative of the Netherlands at the EU. Mr Timmermans doubts whether the appointment can go ahead following the Wikileaks disclosure. Labour MPs have asked for an emergency debate on the affair.
Labour wants to know whether Mr De Gooijer was acting on his own initiative or on instructions from the then foreign minister, Maxime Verhagen, who is deputy prime minister under the present government. Mr Timmermans says, even if acting on instructions from Mr Verhagen, the civil servant was still not expressing the official government position. He doubts whether such a person can be trusted in a position as important as that at the EU. Source: Expatica

Julian Assange: Worst WikiLeaks cables yet to come
The man behind WikiLeaks says his website’s revelations are just the tip of the iceberg. In an exclusive interview with RT, Julian Assange said it is only a matter of time before more damaging information becomes known. The publication of confidential cables proved deeply embarrassing for the US and other countries. “If we look at our work over the last 12 moths, think about that. All these stories that have come out actually happened in the world, before 2010, but people didn’t know about it. So what is it that we don’t know about now? There’s an enormous hidden world out there that we don’t know about. It exists there right now.” Assange claims the data released by WikiLeaks is not even the most important and calls on people not to believe that the information they receive from the media is all that is happening. “We only released secret, classified, confidential material. We didn’t have any top secret cables. The really embarrassing stuff, the really serious stuff wasn’t in our collection to release. But it is still out there.”

Wikileaks reveals Arctic could be the new cold war
Submarine explorers planting Russian flags under the North Pole. Military tension between NATO and Russia. US diplomats manoeuvring in the wings. Aircraft carriers lurking and strike fighters changing hands. Sound like something from a James Bond plot? Unfortunately it’s not.
New Wikileaks releases today have shown the Arctic oil rush is not just a threat to the environment and our climate, but also to peace. The documents show how deadly serious the scramble for Arctic resources has become.
And the terrible irony of it is that instead of seeing the melting of the Arctic ice cap as a spur to action on climate change, the leaders of the Arctic nations are instead investing in military hardware to fight for the oil beneath it. They’re preparing to fight to extract the very fossil fuels that caused the melting in the first place. It’s like putting out fire with gasoline. Source: Greenpeace International
BBC Newsnight reports on fresh Wikileaks cables which show how countries are scrambling over the resources hidden under the melting Arctic ice – which is disappearing at unprecedented rates. Military tensions are escalating as politicans and countries look to carve out their stake.

FRONTLINE: Preview “WikiSecrets” by PBS
It’s the biggest intelligence breach in U.S. history—the leaking of more than half-a-million classified documents on the WikiLeaks website in the spring of 2010. Behind it all, stand two very different men: Julian Assange, the Internet activist and hacker who published the documents, and an Army intelligence analyst named Bradley E. Manning, who’s currently charged with handing them over. Private Manning allegedly leaked the secret cables—along with a controversial video—in the hope of inciting “worldwide discussion, debates and reforms.” Assange’s stated mission has been to force the U.S. and other governments into maximum transparency through his whistle-blowing website. Through in-depth interviews with Manning’s father, Assange, and others close to the case, veteran FRONTLINE correspondent Martin Smith tells the full story behind the leaks. He also reports on the U.S. government’s struggle to protect national security information in a post 9/11 world. Source: PBS
Full Coverage: “WikiSecrets” by PBS Chapter 1 to 5.
On 24 May, 2011, 9pm EST, PBS-Frontline will air a documentary “WikiSecrets”. WikiLeaks has had intelligence for some time that the program is hostile and misrepresents WikiLeaks’ views and tries to build an “espionage” case against its founder, Julian Assange, and also the young soldier, Bradley Manning.
In accordance with our tradition of “scientific journalism” (full primary sources) we release here our, behind the scenes, interview tape between Julian Assange & PBS Frontline’s Martin Smith which was recorded on 4/4/2011. In the tape, Assange scolds Martin Smith for his previous coverage of Bradley Manning and addresses a number of issues surrounding the 1917 Espionage Act investigation into WikiLeaks and Bradley Manning.
The Frontline documentary will include footage of a number of individuals who have a collective, and very dirty personal vendetta, against the organization. These include David Leigh, Adrian Lamo, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, Eric Schmitt and Kim Zetter. While the program filmed other sources, such as Vaughan Smith who provided a counter-narrative, these more credible voices have been excluded from the program presented to the US public.

WikiLeaks: War, Lies, and Videotape
This hard-hitting film investigates the website that has given rise to one of the greatest controversies of the last decade.
WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organization that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources and news leaks. In late 2010, the website created controversy by publishing hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. Diplomatic cables and Military documents.
From the site’s inception through to the current conspiracy allegations, this revealing documentary follows the story of the charismatic founder of the website and new enemy #1 of the Pentagon, Julian Assange.
Directed by award winning investigative reporters Paul Moreira and Luc Hermann from the French press agency Premières Lignes, the film travels to London, Washington, Reykjavik, and Paris to meet the WikiLeaks journalists and hackers who are fighting for transparency and are challenging the all-encompassing rules of Military secrecy.
The film includes an interview with former #2 and spokesperson of the WikiLeaks team Daniel Domscheit-Berg, before he opens his own whistleblowing website and publishes a novel about “his time at the world’s most dangerous website”. Daniel is now a “dissident” after quitting the company. His claim is that the organization is too centered on the figure of Julian Assange and that there was a rush to unleash big news stories in lieu of steadily building up the organization.

WikiLeaks Wins Major Australian Journalism Prize
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange accepted the award for Most Outstanding Contribution to Journalism at the 2011 Walkley Award in Australia, an honor akin to the Pulitzer Prize in the United States. Democracy Now! airs an excerpt from Assange’s acceptance speech and gets reaction from constitutional law attorney and Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald. Today also marks the one-year anniversary of “Cable Gate,” when WikiLeaks began publishing a trove of more than 250,000 leaked U.S. State Department cables. In related news, the U.S. Army recently scheduled a Dec. 16 pretrial hearing for Army Private Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of providing the cables to WikiLeaks. Manning “faces life in prison, possibly the death penalty, for what was an act of conscience,” says Greenwald.
